A POPULAR department store will permanently close a location when its lease expires after the owners decided not to renew.

The Hudson's Bay store had already been closed temporarily since April 10 after a fire.

The incident was deliberate after someone lit a clothing rack on fire, said Regina Deputy Fire Chief Dustin McCullough.

As a result, there was significant smoke and water damage to the store at the Cornwall Centre in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.

However, a spokesperson for Hudson's Bay said that the fire didn't play a role in the decision to not renew the lease.

In a statement to CBC News, a spokesperson said that the decision was made "after careful consideration and lengthy review."

Regarding the employees, the spokesperson said they are "committed to treating every associate with respect and fairness through this process, and transfer opportunities will be explored where feasible."

The Hudson's Bay location in Saskatoon will remain open, the spokesperson said.

CLOSED DOORS

The news comes as London Drugs shuttered 79 locations across Canada last month after a suspected cybersecurity incident.

The pharmacy revealed the reason for the decision in a statement to CTV News.

"London Drugs immediately undertook countermeasures to protect its network and data, including retaining leading third-party cybersecurity experts to assist with containment, remediation and to conduct a forensic investigation," the company said.

The pharmacy said that drastic measures were taken out of an abundance of caution.

London Drugs added that it had "no reason to believe" any client or staff data was compromised.

The chain had locations in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

However, the closures are expected to be temporary, said a spokesperson.

Other pharmacies haven't fared as well and are closing locations permanently.

The U.S. Sun has previously reported on the mass closures across hundreds of Rite Aid stores.

In October 2023, Rite Aid filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Because of this, the chain is set to close about 2,072 locations.

So far, the company has shuttered 387 stores in six months.

However, the chain has said it has plans to escape bankruptcy, reported Reuters.
