A SHOPPER slammed Walmart, saying the company is trying to turn into Costco over its long lines just to get a receipt checked.

Many customers have expressed frustration with having their receipts checked when leaving a store with some even wondering the legality of it all.

Some feel that if they have to bag their own items, they shouldn't have also have their receipts checked[/caption]

In certain stores that require a membership such as Costco or Sam's Club, it's normal for a worker to check a customer's receipt.

However, many Walmart shoppers complain that receipt checking has gotten out of control.

"Hey @WalmartCanada when did you turn into Costco?" wrote a customer on X, formerly known as Twitter, back in 2019.

"Private security guard at Richmond Hill Bayview-Major Mac store is stopping everyone and checking their receipt and items purchased. Shouldn't have to line up to leave a Walmart!"

The Walmart Canada official account responded to the shopper, stating that associates are trained to check receipts to make sure unbagged items have been scanned.

"As more of our stores are equipped with self-checkout machines, our associates will check receipts to make sure the transaction went smoothly."

However, the customers further explained that it wasn't an associate checking their receipt "but a private security guard hired by Walmart."

Several other shoppers commented under Walmart's response with one person writing: "We have also agreed at the scanner that we scanned & bagged correctly. So not only does @WalmartCanada think we are criminals, but also we are liars too."

"You have no rights. You don't train us or pay us to check out our own groceries," wrote another person.

"It is against our civil rights and liberties. You can ask, we don't need to comply. 'No' is a complete sentence. You cannot check us without our consent."

A third person wrote: "No problem @WalmartCanada consumers will shop somewhere where they aren't treated like criminals. This is exactly why brick and mortar is going out of style with the new generation congrats!"

NO TRUST

Paula Fletcher, a Walmart shopper in Ontario, Canada, said an employee made her feel like a felon in the store.

While at the store in 2019, Fletcher said she was scanning her items at self-checkout and noticed an employee eyeing her down before demanding to check her receipt and grocery bags.

She said the employee "did not make it an option."

"I don't like being treated as a criminal," she told CBC.

"If they don't trust us, they shouldn't have self-checkout."

LAWYER WEIGHS IN

Several legal experts have spoken out on Walmart and other retailers checking receipts.

Michael Bryant, head of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, said customers do not need to stop for receipt checks.

"Their right is to say, 'Thanks, but no thanks,' and walk away," Bryant told CBC News in 2019.

"Some people feel strongly about their privacy and, in fact, the way our laws work, that privacy and liberty is protected."

Several others have echoed Bryant's sentiment with many shoppers outright refusing to show their receipts.

A TikToker named Al Pitchman (@al_pitchman) said he almost always refuses to show his receipt when he leaves the store.

"I tell them that I know they are just doing their job and that I have nothing personal against them," he explained in the clip.

"Then, I kindly let the employee know that I do not agree with the policy, I tell them to have a nice day, and I walk out the door."

"Don't be fooled. When you spend your hard-earned dollars at any Walmart, you are NOT required by law, to show your receipt on the way out. #knowyourrights," he captioned the video.
