If they handed out gold medals for the 397 metres race, Matt Hudson-Smith would stand as an Olympic champion rather than crying into his mother's arms on Wednesday. But, as darkness closed in at the Stade de France, the 6ft 4in Briton ran out of engine just as the American champion, Quincy Hall, turned on the afterburners to devastating effect. Our boy was condemned to silver. And so, 100 years after Eric Liddell, of Chariots of Fire fame, took the 400m gold in this same City of Light on a cinder track in Colombes, five miles west, the wait for a British man to triumph over one lap goes on.
