Italian athlete Valentina Petrillo won 11 national men's titles but is now competing as a woman in female Paralympic categories in Paris this month. Petrillo, 51, was granted permission to take part in the event after the sport's governing body accepted her eligibility. She was born male with the name Fabrizio and went on to become a father of two, but transitioned in 2019. On Monday, she qualified for the 400m women's semi-final after coming second in her heat and beating a Chinese runner who is 18 years her junior.
