Brisbane star midfielder Lachie Neale has revealed that he would have refused to play in his side's season-opening fixture against Geelong on Thursday had the game been moved to a different location. But with Cyclone Alfred due to make land on Queensland's south coast on Thursday, the AFL has opted to postpone both of its season-opening matches this week. Brisbane were originally set to unfurl their premiership flag at the Gabba ahead of their match against Geelong, while Gold Coast were due to face Essendon at the People's First Stadium.
