The team has failed to find the momentum it had in the 2024 season, and a lot of that has been attributed to head coach Chris DeMarco. While he expects to return after his first season with the Liberty, fans don't agree.
The Liberty decided to part ways with their championship-winning coach, Sandy Brondello, after the team's Round 1 loss in 2025. However, DeMarco couldn't change the results drastically, as the team struggled to close out the semifinal series against the Dream, losing two games by a combined five points after dropping the opener by 10. When he was asked about continuing with the franchise, the coach said he expected to return next season.
However, fans didn't want him for next season, as one wrote:
"Yes …… listen buddy you're the only one who expects that ☺️"
The Liberty had a 26-18 record in the regular season and finished fourth in the Eastern Conference. Sabrina Ionescu's decline in production was another reason why the team couldn't perform in the semifinals, and she reportedly admitted to it. She contributed 12 points, four rebounds and three assists in 36 minutes.
Sabrina Ionescu addressed the media after the game and shared concerns about her health situation. Though Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones led the team with 26 points each, the guard added 12 points and averaged 16.3 ppg and 3.7 apg in the series.
During the postgame interview, Ionescu revealed her back issues and how that led to the decline in her production:
"Yeah, I mean a lot. It was not an easy year for me physically, mentally and all the above."
The Liberty front office has tried to keep its core, which brought the team its first championship, intact. Team management could be forced to think about a change.
