DRIVERS have slammed a new 'diverging diamond' highway – claiming that the 'hot wheels' track could lead to numerous road collisions.

Locals in Tulsa, Oklahoma, hit out at the diverging diamond interchange, or DDI – the second ever to be built in the city.

"Let the car crashes begin," one fumed.

A second quipped: "Reminds me of that criss cross crash track that Hot Wheels made back in the day."

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation laughed off those concerns.

They said the construction will provide relief for the some 50,000 drivers who battle traffic on the stretch of State Highway 169 daily.

"We're getting near to switching traffic over to driving on the left side underneath the bridge, the Creek Turnpike bridge underneath or over Memorial," ODOT spokesman T.J. Gerlach said.

"That should happen by the end of next week.

"(Drivers will) be directed to back to the right side once they go across the bridge. What this does is it allows for free flowing left turns onto and off of the expressway.

"So those those people turning on or off the highway, they don't have to wait for a left turn signal.

"They're not crossing traffic to get on or off the highway."

<!-- End of Brightcove Player -->

"We can't alleviate the absolute worst at the peak hours, but we're hoping to maybe reduce that peak congestion just by more efficiently flowing traffic through the interchange," Gerlach added.

ODOT predicts construction will be completed by next month.

The U.S Sun has reached out to the Oklahoma Department of Transportation for comment.

HIGHWAY MESSAGES BAN

It comes after news that hilarious messages on electronic signs will soon disappear from highways around the US.

States around the country have been given two years to abide by a new rule regarding how signs and other traffic control devices are regulated.

The regulation is a part of new changes made to The US Federal Highway Administration's 1,100-page manual released last month, Los Angeles-based news network KTLA reported.

Officials have said overhead electronic signs with obscure meanings, references to pop culture, or ones intended to be funny, will be banned in 2026.

They said it's because they can be misunderstood or distracting to drivers.

The agency, which is part of the US Department of Transportation, said signs should be "simple, direct, brief, legible and clear."

Highway and expressway signs should also only be used for important information like warning drivers of crashes ahead, adverse weather conditions, and traffic delays.

Seatbelt reminders and warnings about the dangers of speeding or driving impairment are also allowed.

Certain witty signs on roads in states like Massachusetts, Ohio, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Arizona will be disappearing.

OFFICIALS have plans for over 50 abandoned vehicles to be moved from a harbor as they're dumped illegally.

The Department of Natural Resources Hawai'i Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation division put notices about the crackdown on a number of vehicles in the Kahului harbor of Maui, Hawai'i on Monday.

Parking illegally in a state boating facility is a violation of multiple laws under Hawai'i Administrative Rules[/caption]

The warning lets the drivers of the cars know that it's parked illegally in a state boating facility, local news affiliate The Maui News reported.

The 54 automobiles estimated to be in the boating area will be towed from the state's Kahului Harbor on May 6.

DOBOR Administrator Ed Underwood admitted that the state understands how the condition of the harbor is, in part, a result of the homelessness problem in Hawai'i.

"We recognize the plight houseless individuals face and the extraordinary high cost of living on Maui and across the state," Underwood said.

"However, our boating facilities are open to everyone and it is not appropriate for certain individuals to decide to set up living quarters,

"And to literally trash out places that are owned by all the citizens of Hawai'i. Currently, the harbor area looks like an abandoned vehicle junk yard,

"And we have an obligation to make sure it is clean for the many boaters, fishers, and recreationalists who utilize our facilities on a daily basis."

Parking illegally in a state boating facility is a violation of multiple laws under Hawai'i Administrative Rules.

A number of people in the community have complained about the lack of care being taken of the harbor's open areas and parking lots as people leave trash and stranded cars around the area.

Officials even advised people who live at the harbor to move all their personal property.

<!-- End of Brightcove Player -->

They stressed that anything left behind will soon be hauled off.

Another area of the US also started cracking down on abandoned cars this month as officials say they were unsightly and lowering property values.

The city of Columbus, Ohio removed more than 150 in a day.

The city's mayor noted the abandoned vehicles as being bane and cited concerns of criminal activity.

Andrew Ginther, ordered 150 cars to be relocated in August 2023.

He told CBC affiliate WNBS the decision was made after several complaints to his office from residents.

"Neighborhoods throughout the city are saying we are tired of these junk cars, cars that have been abandoned on our streets," he said.

"They are a blight."

A FEMALE mannequin toppled onto a IndyCar track – startling fans as spooked drivers tried to dodge her.

But unlucky "Georgina" lost part of a limb after plummeting from the pedestrian bridge in Alabama.

'Had to meet the ol'girl even though she nearly ruined my race,' said winner Scott McLaughlin later on X, while sharing a pic of the damaged doll[/caption]

"That lady hanging from the bridge fell!" a concerned Santino Ferrucci told his team, A.J. Foyt Racing, over the radio.

Ferrucci, 25, was in fourth place at Barber Motorsports Park when the dummy plunged mid-race at Sunday's IndyCar event.

But team president Larry Foyt just laughed and replied, "Just keep doing what you're doing."

Motorsport described it as a race full of action, featuring a "mad" moment that caught everyone off-guard.

"Georgina" had been installed by eccentric track owner George Barber in 2016.

"She came loose on lap 52 hitting the deck feet first before pitching face first onto the side of the track," said motoring website Top Gear.

"There's been an accident of a different kind," said one concerned TV commentator.

"Not a real person, we should point out right away.

"This is part of the eccentric part that populates Barber Motorsports Park – question is, is this enough to warrant a yellow (flag)?" they added on NTT IndyCar series.

HAND CHOPPED OFF

Luca Ghiotto, who was making his first IndyCar appearance for Dale Coyne Racing, was the first driver to hit the doll.

His car chopped off a fiberglass and plastic hand.

Safety crews finally removed Georgina from the track after the stricken doll had been lying there for three laps.

"Had to meet the ol'girl even though she nearly ruined my race," Scott McLaughlin later wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

He laughed off the bizarre incident, and even posed alongside Georgina – with her hacked-off wrist raised in the air – for social media pics after the event.

The New Zealander captured his fifth career IndyCar victory on Sunday by winning his second consecutive Alabama Indy Grand Prix.

McLaughlin also shared a photo of an opened can of Banquet beer while joking, "Pouring one out for Georgina."

"I do love that part of this. It's unique. It's just a fun track. Yeah, if I lost to that, to a lady that fell off.

"I won't say anymore. It was a mannequin. It wasn't a real person," he told reporters at the post-race presser.

What happened during the IndyCar race in Alabama on April 28?

Will Power, runner-up, told reporters he knew it was just a doll that had fallen on the 2.3-mile track.

"I saw the yellow (flag) comes out and there's a lady lying on the side.

"I'm like, 'You're kidding me, who let her down?' There's a yellow for that lady.'

MUMMY

"That would have been funny if it came in someone's cockpit, 'There's a lady attacking me!'" said the Team Penske star.

But, he said he hadn't been worried, as "I knew exactly what it was."

"It was a lady hanging there – they're going to have to seriously get some good cables," the driver recommended.

When told that Georgina had lost a hand in the incident, Power also said that maybe the doll should be "go in a glass case, preserve the body, mummify it!"

CAR owners with illegally tinted windows in a US state will start receiving fines for the violation.

In Philidelphia, a driver can already get pulled over for having tints that are dark beyond the legal limit but will also be hit with parking tickets starting in July.

The state allows cars to have window tint rated at 70 percent visible light transmittance on the side windows and the rear windshield[/caption]

Councilman Mike Driscoll co-sponsored the bill that was recently signed into law by Mayor Cherelle Parker, local ABC news affiliate WPVI-TV reported.

"A $100 fine," Driscoll emphasized.

He hopes the parking fine for car owners with illegal tint will prevent traffic stops from having to occur.

If more drivers are caught and cited while stationary, there won't be any reason to pull people over for the violation as much.

The state allows cars to have window tint rated at 70 percent visible light transmittance on the side windows and the rear windshield.

"We're not trying to be punitive," Driscoll added.

"We're just trying to let folks know this is the sort of situation that we don't want to put law enforcement in."

Drivers in Philadelphia have varying sentiments regarding the fine.

"I think there are more important things that they can be taking care of right now than that honestly," A South Philadelphia resident stressed.

"I don't agree with that one," a West Philadelphia driver explained.

"If you're parked you're parked. If they catch you driving that's another thing."

Meanwhile, an owner of a glass tinting business in the city is already losing customers because of this ordinance.

"This doesn't go into effect yet," Rutherford said.

"This is just today and we already lost a customer."

    </div> </div>

The ordinance will be going into effect on July 1, which is 60 days after being signed by Mayor Parker.

In other US states, drivers are being hit with other parking-related changes.

Allentown, Pennsylvania drivers will be hit with parking fines triple the rate they've been paying after officials said low ticket prices didn't act as a strong deterrent in the city.

The city stated parking fines needed to be increased as the rates have stayed at $15 for 20 years.

"The parking fines are bearable to the public such that motorists choose to illegally park for convenience and incur an affordably low fine," Deputy Director of the Allentown Parking Authority Jon Haney said.

A HOMEOWNER resorted to branching out to an advice column about a tree root that made for a muddy exit during certain seasons.

It took a call from an esteemed outlet to get things going in the right direction.

NYC DDC
The New York City Department of Design and Construction agreed the job should be redone – but the Parks Department was more concerned about the tree[/caption]

In the fall of 2019, Donald Kempler, a homeowner in Brooklyn, New York, wrote into New York Post's John Crudele's advice column regarding a legal battle with the city's government after a construction project effectively ruined his driveway.

The root of the issue was an exposed tree root as a result of the construction, making a deep and muddy rut during the fall and winter.

"During December 2018, the sidewalk in front of my Brooklyn property was repaved under the auspices of the Transportation Department's local Sidewalks Repair Project," Kempler's letter to Crudele read.

He had no idea the project would put him in a fierce back-and-forth discourse with the New York City Parks Department and the Department of Design and Construction (DDC).

"In the course of the repair, the paving contractor utilized by the DDC arbitrarily extended the tree pit area facing the rear of my driveway approximately two feet by removing the previously paved surface," he continued

"This resulted in obstructing the egress entering and exiting my driveway."

Not only did it make for a jarring exit and entry into his driveway, it confused both local and visiting drivers.

"It has also created a chronic illegally blocked driveway situation, as vehicle owners now perceive the edge of the extended tree pit to be the legal parking guideline instead of the straightaway driveway line," he wrote.

Kempler contacted the DCC's construction liaison department, where an engineer was sent out to assess the driveway.

The engineer agreed – the job needed to be redone – but due to the tree being such a large factor in the situation, there wasn't much his department could do.

<!-- End of Brightcove Player -->

So, the engineer directed Kempler to contact the Parks Department, which oversees any city area with trees.

At first, the Parks Department seemed wary, especially considering the dangers repaving would impose on the tree.

In the spring of the following year, he wrote to Crudele that things were looking up.

"After writing to the Commissioner of Parks and with the helpful intervention of my local City Councilman's office, on May 1, the Parks Department finally reversed its position, and granted the DDC permission to restore the tree pit area to the original paved condition," he wrote.

However, his delight wouldn't last long – hence his reaching out to Crudele.

The back-and-forth between the two major departments took nearly a year before a resolution surfaced[/caption]

"Incredibly, the DDC, upon notification that the Parks Department had given them the green light to restore my driveway street access to its original condition, then reneged on its commitment to effect the repair and resurrected the tree root issue!"

Crudele wrote back with a short reply, indicating that some calls were made on his behalf.

"As you now know, I called the necessary people and your driveway has been fully restored," responded Crudele.

"The city said your job was on its list."

At the very end of the public response, he couldn't help but throw in a pun.

"Enjoy your driveway and your tree. I'm, ahem, rooting for the both of you."

Gareth Southgate has hinted he should be ready to pick Aaron Ramsdale for England's Euro 2024 squad despite his lack of recreation time at Arsenal.

Ramsdale has seen his minutes severely limited because the arrival of David Raya on loan from Brentford at first of the season.

The Englishman started solely his second league recreation since Raya's arrival last weekend – towards the Spaniard's mum or dad club, Brentford – and committed an enormous error when he dallied on the ball and allowed Yoane Wissa to charge down his clearance and score a bizarre equaliser.

Back in November final, Southgate had suggested that it would be difficult to select the 25-year-old for the national team if he spent a prolonged part of the season deputising for Raya.

Ramsdale opted to stick with Arsenal in January but was, this week, named in England's squad for friendlies towards Brazil and Belgium.

His hopes of any extended spell again within the first staff earlier than the summer time event look extraordinarily faint, particularly after Raya's heroics of their Champions League last-16 penalty shootout win towards Porto in midweek.

But Southgate prompt that he could also be prepared to walk back previous comments over Ramsdale's lack of minutes and take a danger by choosing him in his 23-man squad for Germany.

'We've picked the three goalkeepers we expect are one of the best,' the England boss informed reporters at Wembley on Thursday.

'It's not superb that Aaron's not enjoying. But he showed final week, to answer the error the best way that he did, that he has the psychological resilience to play for England. In that place on the pitch, particularly, that's crucial.

'We still consider he can pressure his approach again into the staff there [at Arsenal]. That can be harder after the penalty shoot-out the other day I might imagine. But he's just acquired to keep pushing daily and coaching nicely daily.

'I feel if we've obtained three goalkeepers and one isn't regular, it's not good, however at this second in time we are prepared to take that probability.'
