After streak-ending victory, LeBron James, Lakers head to Boston

One night after his NBA-record streak of double-digit scoring games ended in dramatic and unselfish fashion, LeBron James will aim to keep the Los Angeles Lakers rolling when they visit the Boston Celtics on Friday.

Los Angeles earned a 123-120 road win over the Toronto Raptors on Thursday when James assisted on Rui Hachimura's 3-pointer at the buzzer.

James scored eight points in the game, the first time since 2007 that he didn't score at least 10, ending a streak of 1,297 games in which he reached double figures. He shot 4 of 17 from the field and missed each of his five 3-point attempts.

James expressed no regrets about deciding to pass at the end rather than shoot in an attempt to win the game and extend the streak. In the end, Hachimura was the hero even over teammate Austin Reaves, who logged 44 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

"Just playing the game the right way," James said. "You always make the right play. That's just been my M.O. That's how I was taught the game. I've done that my whole career. ...

"Once they doubled (Reaves) and the ball got swung to me, I knew it was a numbers game. We had a 4-on-3 advantage, and I was just trying to put the ball on time on target."

Lakers coach JJ Redick said of James' final play, "The basketball gods, if you do it the right way, they tend to reward you."

Reaves and Hachimura might be asked for more heroics on Friday if Lakers star Luka Doncic misses a second game in a row, as is expected. The team officially listed his Thursday absence as being for personal reasons, with no details provided, but multiple media outlets reported that he was in his native Slovenia awaiting the birth of a child.

"We hope to get him back soon," said Redick, whose team has won eight of its past nine games. "... Don't have a pinpointed day, though."

The Lakers also prevailed in Toronto without veteran guard Marcus Smart, who spent the first nine years of his NBA career with the Celtics. Smart sat out his fourth consecutive game because of lower back injury management and is considered day-to-day.

Like the Lakers, the Celtics were missing their top scorer when they earned a win on Thursday.

Jaylen Brown sat out due to an illness, but Boston demolished the host Washington Wizards 146-101.

Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla was coy when he was asked if Brown would play against the Lakers.

"I'm not a doctor," he said. "Sorry, I have no idea."

Jordan Walsh made each of his eight field-goal attempts and tossed in a career-high 22 points for Boston. Walsh, who also collected seven rebounds in the win, has made each of his past 13 shots from the floor.

"Honestly, I (keep) forgetting what happens on offense," Walsh said. "When I score, I lowkey forget what happened (because) I'm so focused on getting back on defense. It leaves my mind, but whenever I get a steal and a dunk, or like a steal and a rebound, that stays with me. ... Defense always sticks with me for some reason."

Boston is 8-2 since Walsh was moved into the starting lineup.

"I thought Jordan set the tone on both ends of the floor," Mazzulla said. "He was unscreenable and did a great job making plays defensively."

The Celtics and Lakers split their two-game regular-season series in seven of the past eight campaigns, the lone exception being a Boston sweep in 2022-23.

Lando Norris with

Lando Norris is the Formula 1 title favorite ahead of a three-way decider in Abu Dhabi — which also means he has the most to lose.

He and teammate Oscar Piastri are each looking to win their first title, but Norris saw his comfortable 24-point lead entering last week's Qatar Grand Prix whittled down to 12 by the end of it as Red Bull's Max Verstappen surged back into the fight.

"Of course, I have the most to lose because I am the one at the top," Norris said Thursday. "I'll do my best to stay there till the end of the year, a few more days. At the same time, if it doesn't go my way, then I'll try again next year. It'll hurt probably for a little while, but that's life."

Norris hasdenied he'll ask Piastri to help outto at least ensure one McLaren driver becomes champion if it seems Verstappen will take the title.

Verstappen's chances were revived when McLarenbotched a strategy callin Qatar, one race after Norris and Piastriwere disqualified in Las Vegas.

Relaxed Verstappen

The one contender who's been in afinal-race deciderbefore, Verstappen said he's "just enjoying being here" in a season where his title defense often seemed impossible.

"I have four of those at home, so it's nice to add a fifth," he said Thursday, looking at the trophy standing next to him.

"I've already achieved everything that I wanted to achieve in F1 and everything is just a bonus. I just keep doing it because I love it and I enjoy it and that's also how I go into this weekend. Have a good time out there, try to maximize the result."

Verstappen was 104 points off the lead at one stage, and wrote his chances off again when he wasn't competitive in qualifying for the Brazilian Grand Prix, three races ago.

Piastri clings on

Piastri had a34-point leadin August and seemed on target to become the first Australian champion in 45 years. He hasn't won in eight races since.

With only a slim shot at the title, Piastri could face the dilemma of whether to sacrifice his own bid for Norris. "I don't really have an answer until I know what's expected of me," he said.

Piastri showed good pace to take second spot in Qatar last week, though he was left "speechless" after a race dominated by McLaren's wrong strategy call.

"Obviously, I need a fair few things to happen this weekend to come out champion," he said, "but I'll just make sure I'm in the right place at the right time and see what happens."

WASHINGTON — The FIFA World Cup draw Friday will be viewed by millions around the globe, but the high-profile event appears to be tailored to one key player: President Donald Trump.

The celebrity-packed ceremony will determine which national teams are sorted into various groups for the2026 men's tournament, resulting in a schedule for most of the 48 countries that will participate. The final slots will be decided by playoff games in the spring.

The U.S., Mexico and Canada are making history as the first group of three nations to host the World Cup together. While the leaders of each host nation will attend, Friday's draw will have some distinct Trump rally hallmarks.

Andrea Bocelli, one of Trump's favorite performers, is set to perform, and the Village People will conclude the draw with Trump's anthem, "Y.M.C.A."

It will be held at the Kennedy Center in the nation's capital, where FIFA President Gianni Infantino will debut the organization's inaugural "Peace Prize." The White House hasn't denied reports that Trump, who hasn't been shy about his desire for theNobel Prize of the same name, is set to receive it.

Infantino, who has formed a close bond with him over the last seven years, has profusely praised Trump's leadership. He even showed up at the Gaza peace summit in Egypt in October and has said Trump "deserves" the Nobel Peace Prize for his "decisive actions" on the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.

While Infantino wasn't able to sway the Nobel committee, FIFA announced its own, brand-new award last month, which is described as a way to recognize "exceptional actions for peace and unity."

Global politics will be at play, as well. It will be the first time Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Trump have met in person. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will also be there, as both countries navigate pressing disagreements with the Trump administration.

Sports legends Tom Brady, Wayne Gretzky, Aaron Judge and Shaquille O'Neal will serve as draw assistants, per FIFA. Recording artists Robbie Williams and Nicole Scherzinger will sing a duet. Model Heidi Klum, comedian Kevin Hart and actor Danny Ramirez will be co-hosts.

In the run-up to the 1994 tournament, the last time the U.S. hosted, then-President Bill Clinton chose not to attend the draw but did go to the opening ceremony and the first game.

Trump has dedicated a significant amount of time to sporting events in his second term so far, appearing at the Super Bowl, the Daytona 500, the NCAA men's wrestling championship, UFC fights, the FIFA Club World Cup final, the U.S. Open men's singles final, a New York Yankees game and the Ryder Cup.

But the question of whether the Trump administration's immigration policies could affect players and those who want to attend matches looms large. The White House has placed travel restrictions on 19 countries, including Iran and Haiti, which have already qualified.

Their fans could be subject to the ban if it remains in effect, and the administration has indicated it may expand to include even more countries. The State Department says it is working closely with people outside the U.S. who have already bought tickets, launching a system known as "FIFA PASS," meant to expedite wait times for visa appointments and interviews.

More than 1 million tickets have sold for the 2026 World Cup, which starts in June, and revenues for FIFA alone are expected to top $10 billion, according to the London-based agency Pitch Marketing Group.

Chaos erupts at Indian airports as country's largest airline cancels flights

NEW DELHI (AP) — Chaos gripped major IndianairportsFriday as passengers of the country's biggest airline,IndiGo, scrambled to cope up with widespread flight disruptions and cancellations triggered by newly enforced rules limiting working hours for crew and pilots.

Scenes of frustration played out as passengers slept on airport floors, queued for hours at customer service counters and waited without clear communication from the airline.

Friday was the fourth straight day of disruptions asthe low cost carrierstruggles with new regulations that mandate longer rest periods and limit night flying hours to address concerns about fatigue and safety.

The first phase of the rules came into effect in July while the second phase kicked in November. IndiGo struggled to adapt its rosters in time, resulting in widespread cancellations and disruptions.

On Thursday, more than 300 IndiGo flights were grounded while several hundreds delayed. A passenger advisory from the Delhi airport Friday stated that all domestic IndiGo flights will remain cancelled until midnight. Other major airlines, including Air India, have not faced similar issues so far.

IndiGo operates around 2,300 flights daily and controls nearly 65% of India's domestic aviation market.

Senior citizen Sajal Bose was scheduled to travel with his wife Senjuti Bose early Friday from Kolkata to New Delhi to attend a friend's silver jubilee celebration. His flight was cancelled an hour before the scheduled take off.

Bose told The Associated Press he was now taking a nine-hour train ride to the city Bagdogra, where he plans to get a flight to New Delhi on another airline. "Its very irresponsible and complete negligence. Very difficult for older people like us," he said.

In an internal email to employees this week, seen by The Associated Press, IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers apologized, and cited technology glitches, schedule changes, adverse weather conditions, heightened congestion and the implementation of the new rules as the reasons for flight disruptions.

The Civil Aviation Ministry said in a statement that the disruptions arose primarily through misjudgment and planning gaps as the airline implemented phase two of the new rules, and that the airline acknowledged that the effect on crew strength exceeded their expectations.

IndiGo has sought temporary exemptions in implementing the new rules and told the government that corrective measures were underway. It has indicated the operations will be fully restored by Feb. 10.

More cancellations are expected in the next couple of weeks, and the airline said it would reduce its flight operations from Dec. 8 to minimize disruptions.

The $19,000 Fabergé egg pendant still had its price tag attached when it was recovered on Thursday. (New Zealand Police)

Police inNew Zealandsaid Friday that they had recovered a Fabergé egg pendant worth $19,000, six days after a man was accused of swallowing it at a jewelry store in an effort to steal it.

The 32-year-old man, who has not been named by authorities, had been closely watched since Nov. 28, when he was arrested after being accused of trying to steal the James Bond-inspired pendant by swallowing it at a Partridge Jewelers store in Auckland, New Zealand's biggest city. Police said they responded to a call by the store's staff.

A photo released by police showed the pendant, which they said was recovered Thursday night, being held by a gloved hand. The slim 20-inch-long gold chain still had the price tag attached, showing a value of more than 33,000 New Zealand dollars ($19,000).

"No medical intervention was required and the pendant passed naturally," police said in a statement.

The suspect remains in custody until his appearance before the Auckland district court on Monday. He did not enter a plea to a charge of theft at his first court appearance on Saturday.

Crafted from 18-carat yellow gold and set with 60 white diamonds and 15 blue sapphires, the special-edition pendant — which is the size of a large fingernail — has "subtle nods" to the 1983 James Bond film "Octopussy" woven into its design, according toFabergé's website.

In the film, Bond engages in a bidding war at an auction over a "superb green-gold imperial Easter egg by Carl Fabergé," which he then swaps for a fake one.

"The exterior of the egg closely follows the design of the Fabergé egg featured in the film," according to the website, which adds that the locket opens to reveal a miniature 18-carat gold octopus inside set with two black diamond eyes.

The man accused of swallowing the pendant underwent a medical assessment following his arrest and was monitored by police around the clock in the hope that it would emerge on its own.

"An officer is assigned to constantly monitor the man," Auckland Central Area Commander Inspector Grae Anderson said Wednesday before the pendant had been recovered.

"Given this man is in Police custody, we have a duty of care to continue monitoring him given the circumstances of what has occurred," he said.

Letitia James with a blue background, holding a microphone

A federal grand jury in Virginia has declined to indict New York Attorney General Letitia James, days after a judge dismissed the earlier case against her.

It marks another blow to Trump's efforts to prosecute those he considers political adversaries, which also includes ex-FBI Director James Comey.

Last month, a judge dismissed the federal cases against James and Comey after finding the prosecutor appointed by Trump was not in the post legally.

James, who had successfully brought charges against President Donald Trump before he won re-election, had said the federal case - which alleged she committed bank fraud and made false statements to a financial institution - was politically-motivated.

CBS News, the BBC's US partner, reported the grand jury declined to sign off on an indictment, citing an unnamed official.

Both cases against James and Comey were dismissed without prejudice, meaning the government can attempt to indict them again.

Made up of members of the public, grand juries only decide if there is enough evidence to take a case to court. In legal terms, a grand jury determines whether probable cause exists to believe a crime has been committed. It does not decide guilt or innocence.

It is extremely rare for a grand jury to decline a prosecutor's request to indict a suspect. In 2016, federal prosecutors investigated more than 150,000 people, and grand juries declined to file charges in only six cases, according to CBS.

The federal government had alleged that James lied when she bought a three-bedroom home in Norfolk with a mortgage loan that required her to use the property as her secondary residence.

The "misrepresentation" allowed James to obtain favourable loan terms that would not have been available for an investment property, prosecutors claimed.

Unnamed sources have told US media that James bought the home for her great-niece in 2020 and that the relative never paid rent for the home.

James released a statement on Thursday, praising the grand jury's decision.

"As I have said from the start, the charges against me are baseless," she said. "It is time for this unchecked weaponization of our justice system to stop."

A lawyer for James, Abbe David Lowell, called the grand jury's refusal "a decisive rejection of a case that should never have existed in the first place". He added that if the government continues to seek a prosecution "it will be a shocking assault on the rule of law and a devastating blow to the integrity of our justice system".

As the top lawyer for the state of New York, James brought a civil fraud case against Trump and his company, the Trump Organization, in 2022. Trump was later found liable of falsifying records to secure better loan deals, leading to a $500m (£376m) fine.

Thepenalty was thrown out by an appeals court, which called it excessive, although it upheld that Trump was liable for fraud.

James and Comey are not the only adversaries of Trump to have faced federal charges.

Trump's former national security adviser, John Bolton, is currently charged with sending and wilfully retaining national defence information.

Rory McIlroy's late birdie burst means he'll be playing on the weekend at the Australian Open

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Not before a bit of back-nine drama at Royal Melbourne, Rory McIlroy has made the weekend at the Australian Open after shooting a 3-under 68 on Friday to finish inside the 36-hole cut line.

McIlroy, who was 2-under on the tournament, was seven strokes behind leaders Daniel Rodriques (64) and Rasmus Neergaard-Peterson (66), who had 9-under totals of 133.

The leading pair were one shot clear of third-place Min Woo Lee, who shot 65 Friday.

Adam Scott (66) was in a tie for fourth with Cameron Smith (65), who avoided adding to his tally ofseven consecutive missed cuts. Scott and Lee were playing in the same featured threesome as McIlroy.

McIlroy started the day at1-over after a 72on Thursday, tied for 57th and trailing the leaders by seven shots. At the time, that was just one shot inside the expected cut of 2-over.

He birdied one hole and had eight pars on his front nine Friday, then had four more pars before making a bogey on the par-5 14th. He missed the fairway to the right off the tee and ended up under a tea tree. McIlroy thenwhiffed on his next shotas his club got stuck in a branch but he recovered to make a 6.

That put him outside the 36-hole cut, but he birdied the next hole, the par-3 15th, to put himself back at even-par and safe, at least, at that stage.

He parred the 16th to stay at even-par then perhaps made his shot of the tournament — from the patchy rough on 17, swinging through a small bush this time, where he tapped in for birdie after a long eagle putt went just wide.

That moved McIlroy to 1-under on the tournament and up about 20 places on the leaderboard, leaving him safe for the weekend, particularly after he birdied the 18th.

"With the wind, it played like a different golf course today," McIlroy said. "I certainly haven't played my best over the past couple of days but it was nice to finish the way I did. Delighted to be here for the weekend . . . seven isn't too far back."

On his whiffed shot from under the trees, McIlory said: "Honestly I can't remember the last time I had a fresh-air shot. Not one of my finer moments but nice to be able to come back over the last few holes."

Co-leader Neergard-Peterson missed the cut last week at theAustralian PGA Championship.at Royal Queensland in Brisbane.

"Certainly I feel like I've proved over the last year or so that I have the level to compete out here and be in the thick of things on Sunday," Neergard-Petersen said.

The highlight of Australian Lee's second round came when he holed out with a 9-iron from 176 meters for eagle on the par-4 10th, raising both arms and waving them in an airplane-style celebration.

"I know it was just random, but it just felt good," Lee said. "It was a big crowd, so I was just doing random stuff."

McIlroy, whose pre-tournament news conferenceincluded commentsthat Royal Melbourne was not the best sandbelt course in the city, had a wild opening round containing six bogeys and five birdies.

McIlroy, the Race to Dubai winnerand whocompleted his career Grand Slamwhen he won the Masters this year, is making his first appearance at the Australian Open since 2015. He won it in 2013.

The winner of the Australian Open, which is the second event on the European tour's new schedule of tournaments for late this year and 2026,receives a Masters exemptionnext year. And the top three finishers not already exempt will qualify for the British Open in 2026 at Royal Birkdale.
