Trump says he'll be involved in review of Netflix-Warner Brothers deal

By Jeff Mason

WASHINGTON, Dec 7 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he would have ‌a say whether a proposed merger betweenNetflixand ‌Warner Brothers should go forward, telling reporters the market share of a combined entity could raise concerns.

"I'll be involved in that decision," ‌Trump told reporters as he arrived at the Kennedy Center ‍for its annual awards show.

Netflix on Friday agreed to buy Warner Bros Discovery's TV, film studios and streaming division for $72 billion, ‌a deal that would hand control of one of Hollywood's most prized assets to the streaming pioneer.

Trump did not say whether he favored approval for the deal, but he pointed to a potential concentration of market power in the entertainment industry.

"That's going to be for ‍some economists to tell…. But it is a big market share. There's no question it could be a problem," Trump said.

210,000 power banks sold on Amazon recalled over fire and burn risks

About 210,000 portable lithium-ion battery power banks sold on Amazon have been recalled over possible fire and burn hazards to consumers, theConsumer Product Safety Commission said.

The recall involves INIU 100,000mAh portable power banks, model BI-B41that were sold on Amazon between August 2021 and April 2022, the recall notice says. They have a black or blue case with the INIU logo and a paw-print LED light on the front.

The power banks can overheat and ignite. The company said it received at least 15 reports of the power banks overheating, including 11 reports of fires that resulted in minor burn injuries and property damage.

Only the portable power banks with serial numbers 000G21, 000H21, 000I21 and 000L21 are included in this recall.

People who purchased the power banks should stop using them immediately and visitINIU's website recall pageto verify the product serial number and register for a full refund.

Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in a range of products, including electronics, appliances, cordless tools and electric bikes, and their usage has been linked tonumerous incidentsof overheating and fires.

Consumers should stop using products with lithium-ion batteries if they detect an odor, a change in color, excessive heat, a change in shape, leaking or odd noises, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

Because of their risk of catching fire, lithium-ion batteries cannot be thrown out in the trash, curbside bins, or even battery recycling boxes. The CPSC recommends consumers contact their municipal household hazardous waste (HHW) collection center for guidance on how to properly dispose of their recalled lithium-ion battery or device.

Death toll rises to 5 after explosion outside a police station in Mexico's Michoacán state

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The number of victimskilled in an explosionoutside a police station in the western Mexican state of Michoacán over the weekend has risen to five, the Attorney General's Office said Sunday.

Twelve others were injured following Saturday's explosion, according to the office.

The blast happened at midday in the center of the town of Coahuayana, on the coast of Michoacán,a state where numerous criminal groups operate, including the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel. It's also where the government recently launched a major security operation given the ongoing violence.

The state prosecutor's office said the vehicle that exploded was a pickup truck and that the remains of two people were found at the scene. Authorities said three of those killed and five of those injured were members of a community police force.

One of the people who died at the scene was the driver of the truck that exploded, officials have said.

The use of explosives — dropped from drones, buried like mines or hidden along roads — has been an increasingly common technique used by criminal groups in the region, although it is not typical for them to be placed in cars.

According to Héctor Zepeda, commander of the community police, the explosion was so powerful that human remains were scattered throughout the area.

The police force is one of several that formed more than a decade ago during a civilian self-defense movement to fight the cartels. The community police forces were later formalized by the state, although in some areas they had been infiltrated by criminals.

The explosion happened while the state governor, Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, was participating in a public event with PresidentClaudia Sheinbaumin Mexico City to celebrate seven years of government by the ruling Morena party.

For two decades, various organized crime groups have fought for control of the territory because Michoacán is a gateway for chemical precursors used in the manufacture of synthetic drugs. They also have another lucrative business: extortion.

At least three of the six drug cartels that the Trump administration hasdesignated as terrorist organizations— Jalisco New Generation, United Cartels and The New Michoacan Family — operate in Michoacán, in addition to a slew of homegrown armed splinter groups, some supported by the Sinaloa Cartel.

Stephen Curry could return to practice as soon as Wednesday as he works back from left leg injury

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Stephen Curry is expected to resume practice with the Golden State Warriors as soon as Wednesday once the team is home from its road trip, the next step in his progression back from a left quadriceps contusion and muscle strain.

The Warriors said Sunday that Curry has begun individual work on the court in the Bay Area and is making good progress, setting up his possible participation in some parts of practice Wednesday if all continues to go well.

Curry was injured duringGolden State's 104-100 lossto the Houston Rockets on Nov. 26 and has missed the last four games. He didn't go on the road with the team to stay back to rehab.

The 37-year-old Curry, in his 17th NBA season, and Houston's Amen Thompson went down hard under the basket with 3:24 remaining and the game tied at 91 after Thompson's drive to the hoop, which initially was whistled an offensive foul. Houston challenged and the call was overturned to a block by Curry — who grimaced in pain on the floor. He limped to the locker room with 35.2 seconds left.

If Curry is healthy enough to return for Friday's home NBA Cup game against Minnesota, he and younger brother Seth could finally be on the court together for Golden State.

Seth Curry re-signed with the Warriorslast Monday after playing with the team during training camp before being waived for financial reasons. He made his debut in a 124-112 loss to the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday and scored 14 points off the bench.

"He's all right," Stephen Curry said in the locker room afterward. "You don't make it this long in this league without being professional and staying ready."

Shedeur Sanders throws for three touchdowns, but Browns falter in the clutch against Titans

The Cleveland Browns have significant questions this offseason about their quarterback position. Shedeur Sanders is doing all he can to provide an answer.

Sanders spent the first half against one-win Tennessee cruising, looking comfortable as he threw for two touchdowns and outplayed No. 1 overall draft pick Cam Ward. After a slow start to the second half, Sanders rallied Cleveland to two clutch touchdowns in the final six-plus minutes of the game to close off a 364 passing yards effort.

Alas, Cleveland being Cleveland, the Browns fell apart on a would-be tying 2-point conversion with just over a minute remaining. The result:a 31-29 loss to the Titans, and more data points for the Browns' future decision-making.

The scenario Sunday was one of those circle-the-calendar days on NFL Draft weekend. Generally, when you have rookie quarterbacks facing one another, you're not seeing two top-flight teams at play. Sometimes that's because a team in position to draft, and then start, a rookie quarterback is, by definition, not a very good team. And sometimes, that's because a team is the Cleveland Browns.

The Titans struck first, as Ward found receiver Elic Ayomanor for a 16-yard touchdown on Tennessee's opening drive. Running back Tony Pollard closed out the first quarter with a monster 65-yard run.

The second quarter might just stand as the best 15 minutes of football Sanders will play all season. He began by threading a perfectly thrown pass to an outstretched David Njoku for a touchdown:

Twelve game minutes later, he found Jerry Jeudy on a beauty of a 60-yard touchdown pass, one of the best throws of Sanders' career:

There were indications that all was not perfectly well for Sanders — struggles throwing the ball into zone coverage, a panicky desperation scramble that led to an intentional grounding penalty — but on the whole, the half was positive for Cleveland as the Browns carried a 17-14 lead into the half.

The second half began with an ugly duet — six straight combined punts, with neither team able to move the ball, sequence after sequence as ugly as the spitting-snow weather. Sanders broke the streak … but in the worst way possible, with a wounded-duck overthrow that the Titans' Xavier Woods easily plucked out of the air. Two plays later, Pollard again stomped into the end zone, this time from 32 yards out to retake the lead for Tennessee.

That was enough to knock the Browns to the canvas for good. Ward turned a Cleveland fumble into another touchdown pass, this one a 5-yarder to Chimere Dike to extend Tennessee's lead to 28-17. Ward finished with 117 yards on 14-of-28 passing, with two touchdowns and one interception.

With five minutes remaining in the game, following another Tennessee field goal, Sanders again had the opportunity to write his own legend. Down 31-17, he guided the Browns downfield and scrambled his way to a chaotic 7-yard touchdown, his first NFL rushing TD of his career.

Sanders then had the opportunity to tie the Titans with his final drive, and did all he could, leading the Browns on a seven-play, 80-yard touchdown drive. Needing 2 points to tie the game, the Browns opted to pull Sanders off the field and direct-snap trickeration to Quinshon Judkins, and it went about as well as you'd expect.

Statistically, this was Sanders' finest game of the season, by far. He threw for 364 yards, passing for three touchdowns and running for another, the first Browns rookie to notch those numbers. He also had several key miscues, including an interception that led directly to a Tennessee touchdown, a fumbled snap on a 2-point conversion, and a tendency to tip his passes by patting the football as he prepared to throw. Still ahead on the Browns' slate: the Bears, Bills, Steelers and Bengals, a rugged way to close out a season.

"I've been this way," Sanderssaid after the game, reflecting on his performance. "This is God showing a lot of people who I am."

Tennessee, meanwhile, posted its highest point total of the season — granted, a low bar to clear — in doubling its win total of the season to 2. With games against the 49ers,Chiefs, Saints and Jaguars still remaining, getting to four wins on the season could be tough, so Tennessee and Ward will surely appreciate this one.

Commanders fear torn ACL for tight end Zach Ertz, lament loss of revered veteran

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Washington Commanders tight end Zach Ertz was feared to have suffered a torn ACL in his right knee after being leveled by a hard hit in the gameat Minnesota on Sunday.

Coach Dan Quinn said the 35-year-old would have an MRI exam for a full diagnosis on Monday, but the injury to the revered veteran further cast a pall over a frustrated locker room following the team's eighth consecutive loss.

"The early signals aren't good," Quinn said. "Let's hope for the best."

The Vikings won 31-0 to hand the Commanders their first shutout since 2019.

Ertz, who was upended during an incomplete pass over the middle late in the third quarter thrown by backup Marcus Mariota after Jayden Daniels wassidelined by an aggravation of his elbow injury, left the Washington locker room on crutches.

Ertz wasunable to put any weight on his legas he was helped off the field and visibly upset as he reached the sideline, before being transported inside on a cart. The 13-year veteran, a second-round draft pick by Philadelphia who won a Super Bowl with the Eagles after the 2017 season, has 50 catches for 504 yards in 2025.

In his second season with the Commanders, Ertz has the second-most receptions by a tight end (825) in the NFL since his debut in 2013, trailing onlyTravis Kelce(1,063 entering Sunday). He recently passed Shannon Sharpe to move into fifth place all time in tight end receptions, behind Tony Gonzalez, Jason Witten, Kelce and Antonio Gates.

"This guy is one hell of a competitor in every way," Quinn said. "To see the frustration and emotion with that, all of us felt that."

Canadian airline to start cancelling flights ahead of planned strike

Air Transat, one of Canada's largest airlines, said it will start gradually suspending some flights starting on Monday ahead of a planned strike.

The union representing the airline's pilots issued a 72-hour strike notice on Sunday, announcing that Air Transat pilots will stop showing up to work on Wednesday if a contract agreement is not reached.

Following the strike notice, the airline said it would gradually shut down its operations "to prevent the consequences of a sudden, unplanned interruption".

The airline called the strike notice "premature" while a union leader said there is still time to avoid the strike.

"No pilot wants to strike, but Air Transat management has left us no choice," Capt Bradley Small, who heads a group of pilots within the union, said in a statement.

"Months of unproductive bargaining ends now. If we cannot reach an agreement, management will be responsible for every cancelled flight and stranded passenger."

Air Transat pilots have been negotiating for nearly a year to replace their current 2015 contract with one that they hope will cement "industry-standard pay, benefits, work rules, and job security", the pilots' union, the Air Line Pilots Association, said.

The union said that 99% of its 750 Air Transat pilots had voted to authorise their leadership to declare a strike.

In response, the airline - which is one of the three largest in Canada - said it will start cancelling flights on Monday, with a suspension of all flights on Tuesday, in preparation for a possible pilots strike on Wednesday.

"This strike notice is premature given the progress made at the bargaining table and the generous offers made by Air Transat," Julie Lamontagne, a human resources officer at Air Transat, said in a statement.

Ms Lamontagne said the airline had been negotiating in good faith, and accused the pilots union of showing "indifference toward Transat" in its "reckless decision" to authorise a strike "that does not reflect the state of negotiations".

The airline said it its flight cancellations were necessary to prevent crews, passengers and aircraft from being "stranded abroad if the strike occurs".

In 2024, Air Transat's flight dispatchers overwhelmingly voted to approve a strike after contract negotiations with their union stalled, but that strike was ultimately averted.
