New York judge orders release of grand jury records in Ghislaine Maxwell investigation

A federal judge in New York on Tuesday granted a Justice Department request to release grand jury material related to Ghislaine Maxwell's case.

U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer said in his ruling that he has taken great care to "put in place a mechanism to protect victims from the inadvertent release of materials within the discovery in this case that would identify them or otherwise invade their privacy."

Engelmayer said the grand jury materials in the case, however, "would not reveal new information of any consequence."

He said the two panels heard only "summary testimony from two law enforcement officials; and, with minor exceptions, the evidence before the grand juries was already a matter of public record, largely as a result of Maxwell's 2021 trial."

Maxwell was convicted of federal sex trafficking charges, including conspiracy to entice minors to travel to engage in illegal sex acts, participation in a sex-trafficking conspiracy and sex trafficking of a minor. She is serving a 20-year prison sentence.

Tuesday's ruling comes days after afederal judge in Floridaalso ordered the release of grand jury investigations into Jeffrey Epstein from 2005 and 2007. Congress passed a law last month ordering the Justice Department to release all of its records related to Epstein.

Another judge has yet to rule in a separate request to unseal grand jury records in New York related to Epstein, the politically connected financierwho died in prison in 2019 awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.

NBC News reached out to Maxwell's attorney for comment.

Last week, Maxwell's attorney, David Oscar Markus, said in a filing that Maxwell "does not take a position" on the Justice Department's request to unseal the material but argued that releasing it "would create undue prejudice" and prevent "the possibility of a fair retrial."

The U.S. Supreme Court this yearrejected Maxwell's challengeto her criminal conviction for recruiting and grooming teenage girls to be abused by Epstein, but in a court filing last week, her attorney said she plans to file another petition challenging the conviction.

The Justice Department filed the motion to unseal grand jury transcripts in July afterPresident Donald Trump urged Attorney General Pam Bondi"to produce any and all pertinent Grand Jury testimony, subject to Court approval."

That directive came after the Justice Department and the FBI said in a joint memo that they had conducted an exhaustive review of the Epstein and Maxwell cases, that no other people would be charged in connection with their trafficking of minors and that no additional material or evidence would be released.

The unsigned memo sparked tremendous public backlash, including from supporters of Trump, because he, Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel had vowed to be more transparent about the probe.

Engelmayerrejected the Justice Department's first requestto unseal the materials in the case in August and suggested the government was being misleading in its stated reasons for making them public.

"Its entire premise — that the Maxwell grand jury materials would bring to light meaningful new information about Epstein's and Maxwell's crimes, or the Government's investigation into them—is demonstrably false,"he wrote.

The materials "do not discuss or identify any client of Epstein's or Maxwell's. They do not reveal any heretofore unknown means or methods of Epstein's or Maxwell's crimes. They do not reveal new venues at which their crimes occurred. They do not reveal new sources of their wealth. They do not explore the circumstances of Epstein's death. They do not reveal the path of the Government's investigation," Engelmayer wrote then.

"There's no 'there' there," he added.

In the opinion Tuesday, Engelmayer acknowledged that the Epstein and Maxwell victims who have written letters to the court are "largely supportive of the Act's command that DOJ's investigative records" be made public. Still, he said, they voiced concerns that their identities and privacy would be compromised as records were released.

Engelmayer added, "The victims' concerns, regrettably, have a basis in fact." He argued that the Justice Department paid "lip service" to the victims but "has not treated them with the solicitude they deserve," pointing to the Justice Department's filing the motion to unseal grand jury materials in July "without giving notice to Maxwell's and Epstein's victims."

He said he changed his position on the release of the materials because of the passage of the Epstein Files Transparency Act, legislation that was passed last month and signed into law by Trump. It requires the Justice Department to make public "all unclassified records, documents, communications, and investigative materials" relating to Epstein and Maxwell in its possession, which the Justice Department argued would include the grand jury materials.

Engelmayer agreed.

It's unclear when the materials will be released. Engelmayer said the court would require the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York to "personally certify" that material is "rigorously reviewed" before it is released to ensure victims' identities are protected.

fresh vegetables salad with dressing

If you've bought salad dressing or sauces recently, then it's worth checking your fridge due to a critical recall. On November 6, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a recall for thousands of gallons of dressings and condiments produced by Ventura Foods LLC. On December 4, the FDAescalated the notice to a Class II recall, underscoring the importance of clearing these products from store shelves and your kitchen. Here's what you need to know.

What products are being recalled?

The updated recall includes several products by Ventura Foods LLC, including the following dressings and sauces:

  • Caesar Dressing (Costco Food Court)—32 LB (14.51 kg); SKU: 0 26700 19376 7

  • Caesar Dressing (Costco Service Deli)—23.62 LB (10.71 kg); SKU: 0 26700 19376 7

Costco additionally recalledtwo prepared items—its Caesar Salad (item number 19927) and its Chicken Sandwich with Caesar Salad (item number 11444)—that had contained the recalled dressing, and have since expired. Both had sell-by dates between October 17 and November 9.

Why are salad dressings being recalled?

According to both the FDA and Costco, the affected sauces and dressings may contain "plastic foreign material," prompting the voluntary recall.

Where were they distributed?

Because many of the items were produced in large food-service quantities, they were likely distributed to delis, cafeterias and similar operations. The products were distributed across 27 states:Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.

What does a Class II recall mean?

The FDAexplains on its websitethat a Class II recall is its second-highest category, defining it as "a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote."

What should I do if I purchased these products?

Though the FDA did not provide specific instructions on what to do if you purchased any of these products, as with all recalls, it's best not to consume them and to contact your place of purchase for instructions on obtaining a refund. Costco added in its notice that customers should stop eating the product and return the item to your local Costco for a full refund.

French lawmakers narrowly approve health care budget, suspending Macron's flagship pension reform

PARIS (AP) — France's lower house of parliament narrowly approved on Tuesday a key health care budget bill, offering the minority government some relief from political turmoil at the cost of suspending President Emmanuel Macron'sflagship pension reform.

The bill passed by 247 votes in favor while 234 lawmakers voted against.

The Social Security budget includes the suspension of Macron'sunpopular pension changes, which raise the retirement age from 62 to 64, until after the next presidential election in 2027.

With no majority at the National Assembly, centrist Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu offered to put the reform on hold as a concession to the Socialists, who voted for the bill. The move aims to prevent his fragile minority government from being toppled.

French politics have been in turmoil since Macroncalled early parliamentary electionsin June last year which resulted in a deeply fragmented legislature.

Macron appointed Lecornu, 39, in September after budget debates led to the fall of previous prime ministers. Lecornu promised he wouldseek compromiseswith lawmakers from the left and the right to pass bills.

Lecornu will soon face another major hurdle as lawmakers prepare to vote later this month on the state budget for 2026. The prime minister vowed to prioritize decreasing France's ballooning deficit.

France's previous prime minister was ousted over plans to cut 44 billion euros ($51 billion) in public spending, meant to rein in debt of the European Union's second-largest economy.

France's deficit hit 5.8% of gross domestic product last year, way above the official EU targetof 3%.

The country has a high level of public spending driven by generous social welfare programs, health care and education — and a heavy tax burden that falls short of covering the costs.

Phillies sign manager Rob Thomson to 1-year extension after 4 straight trips to playoffs

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies signed manager Rob Thomson to a one-year contract extension through the 2027 season after he led the team to four straight trips to the playoffs.

The 62-year-old Thomson guided the Phillies to the 2022 World Series and the 2023 National League Championship Series and led them in 2024 and 2025 to NL East titles. The Phillies were eliminated in four games by the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Division Series.

Thomson has guided the Phillies to the second-most wins (346) and second-best winning percentage (.580) among all team in MLB, behind only the Dodgers (368 wins, .616).

He replaced Joe Girardi as Phillies manager on June 3, 2022. Thomson has been with the club since the 2018 season when he was first hired as bench coach under former manager Gabe Kapler.

He spent 28 years as a member of the New York Yankees organization (1990-2017), including 10 seasons on the major league coaching staff as bench coach (2008, 2015-17) and third base coach (2009-14).

Thomson became only the fourth manager in MLB history to reach the postseason in each of the first four full seasons to begin a managerial career. He joined Dave Roberts, Aaron Boone and Mike Matheny as the only managers to accomplish the feat. Thomson became only the third manager in Phillies history to win consecutive division titles, joining Charlie Manuel and Danny Ozark.

Quentin Jammer holds up to fingers to acknowledge fans during practice. He holds his helmet with the other hand.

Longtime San DiegoChargersdefensive backQuentin Jammerhad a rough year in 2011.

On the field, he was having his worst statistical season after a decade in the NFL. Off the field, the father of three young sons was going through a painful divorce.

On Monday, Jammer made a revelation that shed some light on just how dark those days were for him.

"True story……. In 2011 I played completely s— faced drunk in at least 8 games,"Jammer wroteMonday night on X.

Naturally, fans had a lot of questions, and the Chargers' 2002 first-round draft pick was happy to engage with many of them. He shared that he had "2 tequila bottles in my bag" on those particular game days and that he "drank [the] whole gameand all the way home."

Did being inebriated affect his play?

"I played well in all but 1 game,"said Jammer, whoaddedthat during that particular game, "I was out there seeing s— that wasn't there!"

Jammer didn't specify which game that was, but in the past he has referred to the Chargers' 24-17 loss to the Oakland Raiders on Nov. 10, 2011, as "probably the worst game in my life." During that game, Jammer gave up 105 passing yards, including two long touchdown receptions to Raiders receiver Denarius Moore.

Overall in 2011, Jammer allowed six touchdowns, broke up just eight passes and gave up an average of 10.5 yards per passing attempt against him. He finished his 12-year career with 21 interceptions but didn't have any that season.

Asked on X why he was drinking during games, the former Denver Broncos player responded, "Divorce man!"

He called that time a "traumatic period" in his life. While he didn't elaborate on whether anyone with the Chargers knew what he was doing, Jammer said, "They knew what was going on in my life at the time.

"Trust me 100% of u all would've done the same,"he wrote.

A June 2012 column by Kevin Aceeof the San Diego Union Tribune spoke of Jammer's "encompassing sadness" during the previous season. While there was no mention of Jammer drinking during games, the article stated that "many nights, he marinated his despair in alcohol."

"I was going through a divorce," Jammer told Acee. "It's hard playing football when so much is on your mind."

He added: "It still hurts. The difference is I'm better."

Jammer seems to be doing well now too. On Monday when one commenter on X said , "Hope all is well,"the 46-year-oldentrepreneurresponded: "Is now brother! Thank you."

Returning to X on Tuesday morning, Jammer said that talking about some of the low points of his life ispart of his own healing process.

"I'm just getting out the negative s— to the world so it can't continue [to] consume me,"he wrote. "Embarrassing s— should b shared so it holds no power!"

About 400 immigrant children were detained longer than the recommended limit, ICE admits

McALLEN, Texas (AP) — Hundreds of immigrant children lingered in federal detention beyond a court-mandated limit, including some who were held more than five months, according to court filings that alarmed legal advocates who say the government is failing to safeguard children.

Attorneys for detainees highlighted the government's own admissions to longer custody times for immigrant children, contaminated food, a lack of access to medical care or sufficient legal counsel reported by families and monitors at federal facilities, as well as a renewed reliance onhotels for detention.

The attorneys' reports were filed late Monday in a civil lawsuit launched in 1985 that led to the creation in 1997 of court-ordered supervision of standards and eventually established a 20-day limit in custody. The Trump administration is attemptingto endthe agreement.

A Dec. 1 report from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement indicated that about 400 immigrant children were held in custody for more than the 20-day limit from August to September. They told the court the problem was widespread and not specific to a region or facility. The primary factors that prolonged their release were categorized into three groups: transportation delays, medical needs, and legal processing.

Legal advocates for the children contended those reasons do not prove lawful justifications for the delays in their release. Through interviews with detained families, advocates identified five children held for 168 days. The report didn't say how old those children were.

ICE did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday.

Hotel use for temporary detention is allowed by the federal court for up to 72 hours, but attorneys questioned the government's data, which they believe did not fully explain why children were held longer than three days in hotel rooms.

Conditions at the detention facilities continued to be an ongoing concern since the family detention site in Dilley, Texas, reopened this year.

Advocates documented injuries suffered by children and a lack of access to sufficient medical care. One child bleeding from an eye injury wasn't seen by medical staff for two days. Another child's foot was broken when a member of the staff dropped a volleyball net pole, according to the court filing. "Medical staff told one family whose child got food poisoning to only return if the child vomited eight times," the advocates wrote in their response.

"Children get diarrhea, heartburn, stomach aches, and they give them food that literally has worms in it," one person with a family staying at the facility in Dilley wrote in a declaration submitted to the court. Another wrote that they were given "broccoli and cauliflower that were moldy and had worms."

Chief U.S. District Judge Dolly Gee of the Central District of California is scheduled to have a hearing on the reports next week, where she could decide if the court needs to intervene.

This story has been edited to show that the court filing was submitted Monday evening, not Wednesday.
