Lamar Wilkerson (44) hits Indiana-record 10 3s in rout of Penn St.

Lamar Wilkerson scored a career-high 44 points and set a school record with 10 3-pointers in Indiana's resounding 113-72 win over Penn State on Tuesday in Bloomington, Ind.

Wilkerson, a transfer from Sam Houston State, finished 16-of-22 shooting from the field and 10-of-15 from 3-point range in an electric 24-minute performance. Reed Bailey added 18 points on 6-of-6 shooting from the field and 6-of-6 from the foul line, while Tayton Conerway chipped in 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting.

Indiana (8-2, 1-1 Big Ten) finished at 68.9% shooting from the floor and a blistering 54.8% (17-of-31) from 3-point range.

Kayden Mingo scored 19 points to pace Penn State (8-2, 0-1). Freddie Dilione V notched 14 points for the Nittany Lions, while Melih Tunca added 13 points.

Indiana led 12-9 after seven minutes before Conerway made a 3-pointer to begin the onslaught.

Wilkerson's driving layup with 10 ½ minutes left in the half sent the lead into double digits for the first time. That bucket was part of a 20-3 run by the hosts and a personal 9-0 run by Wilkerson, who drained a 3-pointer shortly thereafter to make it 30-12.

After a basket by Mingo, the Hoosiers responded with a 7-0 burst to make it 37-14.

Things didn't get any better for the Nittany Lions, who trailed 47-16 after Conerway's layup with 3:54 left in the half.

Bailey's three-point play in the final minute sent Indiana into the locker room with a 58-26 advantage.

Wilkerson led all scorers with 20 first-half points, fueling a 67.6% shooting effort by the hosts. Penn State, meanwhile, had more turnovers (11) than baskets (nine) in the first half.

Wilkerson caught fire from 3-point range early in the second half, burying five triples in the first six minutes. The final 3-pointer in that sequence made it 81-34 before Bailey's dunk gave Indiana its largest lead at 49 points.

Wilkerson had one more hot stretch, during which he made a jumper, the record-breaking 3-pointer and two free throws to cap his special night.

Philip Rivers: 8 wild stats about new but old Colts QB, an 8-time Pro Bowler who just turned 44 and is a grandfather

Philip Rivers last played in an NFL game on Jan. 9, 2021 for the Indianapolis Colts during a 27-24 wild-card loss to the Buffalo Bills. His final throw was a Hail Mary.

That's what thequarterback-needy Colts reportedly signing Rivers to their practice squad Tuesdayfeels like.

He turned 44 Monday. It's been close to five years since he took his last snap in the league. Now a grandfather, Rivers has spent much of his retirement coaching high school football at St. Michael Catholic in Fairhope, Alabama.

That's where Colts rookie quarterbackRiley Leonardis from. After Daniel Jones' breakout yearprematurely ended with a torn Achilles tendonin the first quarter of a 36-19 loss to the AFC South-leading Jacksonville Jaguars this past weekend, Leonard stepped in, with 2023 No. 4 overall draft pick Anthony Richardson Sr. still on injured reserve because of anorbital fracture that he suffered during a pregame warmup accident in Week 6.

Leonard played admirably in Jones' absence, however, he reported an injury of his own Monday. The sixth-round pick, who led Notre Dame to a national championship appearance last season, is dealing with a knee issue that puts his status for Sunday's road game against the Seattle Seahawks in question.

In desperation mode, the 8-5 and playoff-hopeful Colts reached out to Rivers. The team worked him out Monday night, according to The Athletic, which reported his practice squad signing Tuesday.

The Colts' only other healthy quarterback on the roster right now is journeyman Brett Rypien, who has four career starts since going undrafted out of Boise State in 2019. Rivers, meanwhile, is an eight-time Pro Bowler and one-time NFL Comeback Player of the Year who has 240 career starts and has already pushed Indianapolis to the playoffs once before.

Regardless if he starts Sunday against the Seahawks, his return to the NFL is remarkable. These numbers paint the picture of Rivers' head-turning comeback.

13 ... current NFL head coaches Rivers is older than

Yup, that's right. Rivers is older than more than a third of the head coaches in the league right now, including interims.

In fact, he's older than both head coaches in a game he could play in Sunday. Colts head coach Shane Steichen is 40, and Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald is 38.

Rivers is also older than:

Kellen Moore, New Orleans Saints (37 years old)Mike Kafka, New York Giants (38)Ben Johnson, Chicago Bears (39)Sean McVay, Los Angeles Rams (39)Liam Coen, Jacksonville Jaguars (40)Kevin O'Connell, Minnesota Vikings (40)DeMeco Ryans, Houston Texans (41)Jonathan Gannon, Arizona Cardinals (42)Zac Taylor, Cincinnati Bengals (42)Mike McDaniel, Miami Dolphins (42)Kevin Stefanski, Cleveland Browns (43)

Also of note: Rivers is older than Colts offensive coordinator Bob Cooter (41). Rivers spent the first 16 seasons of his career with the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers. They selected the North Carolina State product with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2004 draft. At the time, Colts center Tanor Bortolini was 1 year and 10 months old, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

10 ... children fathered by Rivers, including one who is older than Riley Leonard

With Rivers at quarterback, he can field an entire 11-player Turkey Bowl offense with his own children. Hehas 10 of them: seven daughters and three sons. The eldest of the bunch, Halle, was born in July 2002, two months before Colts rookie quarterback Riley Leonard came into the world, and she now has a son.

AsRivers told Jon Gruden in May, there's a worldin which Rivers' youngest son— who was born in October 2023 — throws a touchdown pass to Rivers' grandson.

26 ... semifinalists for Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 2026, and Rivers is one of them — for now, at least

Rivers is one of 26 modern-era semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 2026. It'sthe first time he's eligible for the Hall.

That said, if he's elevated to the Colts' active roster, his candidacy clock will reset, meaning he'll have to wait five more years to be enshrined.

But if he remains on the practice squad, his eligibility timeline won't be affected.

8 ... years Rivers spent with Shane Steichen earlier in his career

Rivers and his new head coach go way back. For half of the signal-caller's Chargers tenure, he overlapped with Shane Steichen, who climbed the coaching ladder with the organization. Steichen was a defensive assistant from 2011-12, an offensive quality control coach from 2014-15 and quarterbacks coach from 2016-19. He also was the team's interim offensive coordinator during the 2019 campaign, Rivers' final go-around with the Chargers before he spent one season with the Colts.

What's more, according to former three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year JJ Watt, who now works as a color analyst for CBS, Rivers ran the same offense as the Colts this season while coaching St. Michael Catholic this season, with his oldest son Gunner under center. By the way, Gunner is the No. 7 quarterback in the 2027 recruiting class, per the Rivals industry ranking.

Fun Fact learned in production meetings:Philip Rivers ran the same offense as the Colts for his son Gunnar's HS team this season. He and Shane Steichen spoke weekly about it, discussing plays and even film.So familiarity with the scheme should be no problem whatsoever.

4 ... other NFL quarterbacks have started a game at 44 or older

Rivers would become the fifth in that category if he's moved to the active roster and gets the nod for a Colts team that's fighting for a playoff spot in a crowded AFC field, according to ESPN's Evan Kaplan.

He'd join rare air occupied by Tom Brady (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), Vinny Testaverde (Carolina Panthers), Steve DeBerg (Atlanta Falcons) and Warren Moon (Kansas City Chiefs).

Rivers was asked at his Colts introductory press conference in 2020 how long he intended to play.

"I'm not going to get carried away. I don't think you'll see me in the Tom Brady range," Rivers said at the time, per The Athletic's Jim Ayello.

Brady was 45 when he said goodbye to the NFL for good. Minds can change — clearly.

As for what Rivers is walking into, the Colts have four games left in the regular season. They're gearing up for a gauntlet consisting of games against the 10-3 Seahawks, the 9-4 49ers, the 9-4 Jaguars and the 8-5 Texans.

When Philip Rivers arrived in Indy in 2020, the 39-year-old QB was asked at his opening press conference how long he planned to play."I'm not going to get carried away. I don't think you'll see me in the Tom Brady range."Rivers is 44. Tom Brady retired (for good) at 45.

8 ... quarterbacks who have started for Colts since Rivers' last game with the team

There's been a revolving door at the position since Andrew Luck's shocking retirement ahead of the 2019 season. The Colts opted for short-term rentals like Rivers until they took a big swing drafting Richardson in 2023. That experiment hasn't panned out so far.

While it appeared as if they scored on the Jones acquisition from this past offseason, the injury bug had other plans.

Now Rivers could be back in the saddle. Just look at this list, dadgummit:

4 ... quarterbacks who threw for 300-plus yards in the playoffs during their final NFL game — a list that currently includes Rivers

Does Rivers still haveit? That would be something. He sure held his own during the 2020 season with the Colts. That year, he went out with a bang, throwing for 309 yards and two touchdowns, albeit in a three-point loss to a young Josh Allen and his burgeoning Bills.

Rivers, according to senior NFL researcher Dante Koplowitz-Fleming, is currently one of four players in league history to put on a 300-yard passing performance in the playoffs during their final NFL game.

The others are Tom Brady (2022 wild-card round), John Elway (Super Bowl XXXIII during 1998 season) and Joe Montana (1994 wild-card round), per Koplowitz-Fleming.

No wonder teams have reportedly been using Rivers as their break-glass-in-case-of-emergency quarterback for years now. The Athletic's Zak Keeferreported Mondaythat the Colts considered bringing Rivers out of retirement down the stretch of the 2021 season when then-starter Carson Wentz tested positive for COVID-19.

Then there's the story about49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan preparing to turn to Rivers if his team reached the Super Bowl without a reasonable option at quarterback at the end of the 2023 season. That year, San Francisco dealt with a collection of injuries at the position, including an elbow injury to Purdy that derailed the Niners' chances in the NFC championship game versus the Eagles.

6,772 ... number of fans reportedly in attendance for Rivers' most recent NFL game

Speaking of that wild-card loss to the Bills, the paid attendance was reported to be 6,722 at Highmark Stadium because of COVID-19 protocols back then.

How long ago was Philip Rivers' last NFL game? The Colts' 27-24 playoff loss at Buffalo had paid attendance of just 6,772 thanks to COVID protocols.Rivers' last TD pass was to Jack Doyle, who retired after the 2021 season.pic.twitter.com/bD4zAYjCMP

No. 2 Michigan blasts Villanova for another lopsided win

Elliot Cadeau had 18 points and four assists as No. 2 Michigan overwhelmed Villanova 89-61 in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Tuesday night.

Michigan (9-0) came up just two points shy of a fifth consecutive victory by a margin of 30 or more points. The Wolverines, who led by 30 at halftime, had eight players with seven or more points in their latest thrashing.

Aday Mara supplied 11 points and eight rebounds and Trey McKenney contributed 10 points with six rebounds. Yaxel Lendeborg and Roddy Gayle Jr. added nine points apiece.

Devin Askew led the Wildcats (7-2), who had their seven-game winning streak snapped, with 18 points. Christian Jeffrey added 12 points.

Michigan held a three-point lead after the first five minutes, then extended it to 14 with an 11-0 run. Cadeau got it started with a jumper. Morez Johnson then converted a layup off a Lendeborg steal.

Nimari Burnett hit a 3-pointer before Lendeborg made another steal and dunked on the fastbreak. Gayle finished it off with a layup after a Burnett offensive rebound.

A 3-pointer and a four-point play by Askew allowed the Wildcats to pull within eight at 24-16. Michigan answered with a 15-0 outburst.

A handful of Wolverines scored during that span. Gayle got the run going with a jumper and L.J. Cason knocked down a jumper and layup. Will Tschetter finished it off with a four-point possession after a Villanova turnover.

Cadeau scored in the paint with two minutes left in the half to push the lead to 48-23. He also had the last points of the half -- a 3-pointer from the wing -- to give the Wolverines a 53-23 halftime advantage.

Trump once denied using this slur about Haiti and African nations. Now he boasts about it

PresidentDonald Trumpadmitted Tuesday that he used the slur "shithole countries" todisparage Haiti and African nationsduring a 2018 meeting with lawmakers, bragging about a comment that sparked global outrage during his first term.

Back then, Trumphad deniedmaking the contemptuous statement during a closed-door meeting, but on Tuesday, he showed little compunction reliving it during arally in Pennsylvania. He went on to further disparage Somalia as "filthy, dirty, disgusting, ridden with crime."

Trump was boasting in his speech that he had last week "announced apermanent pause on Third World migration, including from hellholes like Afghanistan, Haiti, Somalia and many other countries," when someone in the crowd yelled out the 2018 remark.

That prompted him to recall the2018 incident. His telling hewed closely to thedescription offered at the timeby people who were briefed on the Oval Office meeting.

"We had a meeting and I said, 'Why is it we only take people from shithole countries,' right? 'Why can't we have some people from Norway, Sweden?'" Trump told rallygoers.

"But we always take people from Somalia," he continued. "Places that are a disaster. Filthy, dirty, disgusting, ridden with crime."

The White House at the time did not deny Trump's remarks, but the presidentposted on Twitterthe day after the news broke that "this was not the language I used." He added that he"never said anything derogatory about Haitians."

Back in 2018, Trump's comments denigrating predominantly Black nations while seeking more migration from predominantly white countries were widely denounced as racist. Some congressional Republicanscondemned the comments, andforeign leaders were outraged. Botswana's government summoned the U.S. ambassador, and Senegal's President Macky Sall said he was shocked, noting, "Africa and the Black race merit the respect and consideration of all."

But since then, Trump has pushed past many norms and traditions of decorum that had guided his predecessors, both in his first term and in the years since. He often peppers his public remarks with curse words, and this year hasdropped the F-bombas cameras were rolling — on two separate occasions.

On Thanksgiving, in apair of lengthy postson social media complaining about immigrants, he demeaned Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, using a dated slur for intellectually disabled people. Asked by a reporter if he stood by a comment that many Americans find offensive, Trump was unrepentant. "Yeah. I think there's something wrong with him," he said.

San Diego officials approve $30M settlement for family of teen killed by police

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego City Council on Tuesday approved a $30 million payment to the family of a 16-year-old killed by police in one of the largest such settlements in U.S. history.

The settlement exceeds the $27 million the city of Minneapolis agreed to pay the family ofGeorge Floyd, whose May 2020 murder by a police officer who knelt on his neck sparked a nationwide racial reckoning.

Surveillance and body-worn camerafootage from Jan. 28 showed Konoa Wilson running away from someone who pulled a gun and fired at him in a downtown train station. As he exited the station, Wilson encountered San Diego Police Officer Daniel Gold.

In the lawsuit against the city and Gold, the family alleged the officer "instantly, without any warning," fired two shots at Wilson as he ran by, striking him in the upper body. The lawsuit identified Wilson as Black.

Councilmember Henry Foster III became emotional when speaking about the shooting, sharing his fears about the dangers that Black youth face: "If only you could understand the fear I feel when my son leaves the house."

"Kanoa's life was taken while fleeing from gunshots, and he found himself running into the arms of a police officer. This should not have happened," Foster said.

He also questioned the state of reform since Floyd's death: "Where's the progress? Where's the protect and serve? Better yet, where's the accountability?"

He challenged Mayor Todd Gloria and Police Chief Scott Wahl to do better.

Lt. Cesar Jimenez, a spokesperson for the San Diego Police Department, said Gold is currently on an administrative assignment while the shooting is under investigation.

The department in releasing the body camera footage stated that officers found a gun under Wilson's clothing as they administered first aid, though the teen did not pull it out before being shot by Gold.

The lawsuit said Gold did not announce he was a police officer until after shooting him in the back. It said Wilson was running past the officer "in an attempt to get to a place of safety."

Wilson was pronounced dead less than an hour after he was taken to the hospital.

The family's attorney, Nick Rowley, said the settlement "brings some semblance of accountability, but not closure."

"You don't get closure when your child is shot in the back for doing nothing wrong by the people who are supposed to be protecting him," he said in a statement e-mailed to The Associated Press. "We hope that Konoa's story will send a message across the country: Cities will pay dearly when officers violate the law and take a life without justification."

Dodgers' Dave Roberts helped UCLA football coach search during MLB playoffs

LOS ANGELES — AsUCLAlooked for its next football coach, with hopes he will bring championships to Westwood, theBruinsgot help from someone in the midst of winning their own.

Los Angeles DodgersmanagerDave Robertswas part of UCLA's coaching search, all while his club was chasing back-to-back World Series championships.

UCLA put together a search committee that consisted of athletic director Martin Jarmond and several high-profile alumni to find the next football coach afterDeshaun Foster was fired in September. The Bruins ultimately landedJames MadisoncoachBob Chesney, and it was at his introductory press conference on campus on Tuesday, Dec. 9 when the search committee mentioned Roberts' involvement.

Jarmond said Roberts "supported the process purely out of his care for the program."

Virginia Tech hired James Franklin as its next head coach. Franklin was fired earlier this season at Penn State. He replaces Brent Pry, who was fired midseason by the Hokies. Oklahoma State hired Eric Morris from North Texas to be the Cowboys next head coach. Morris replaces longtime OSU coach Mike Gundy, who was fired earlier this season. Colorado State hired Jim Mora Jr. as its new head coach. Mora led UConn to back-to-back nine-win seasons and replaces Jay Norvell, who was fired midseason. Oregon State hired Alabama co-offensive coordinator JaMarcus Shephard as its head coach, replacing Trent Bray who was fired after an 0-7 start this season.

These college football coaches are on the move. See who found new home

Before playing professional baseball and becoming a manager, Roberts played for the UCLA baseball team, where he set the school's all-time stolen base record.

Bob Myers, a former UCLA basketball player and sports executive that was architect of the Golden State Warriors' dynasty as general manager, was also part of the search committee. He told reporters that Roberts was looped in while the MLB season and postseason went on, and the Dodgers' skipper joined in on virtual meetings.

"For Dave to even take the time to jump on a Zoom, it showed that he cared," Myers said. "He does care about UCLA."

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts at the 2022 Sun Bowl.

While being part of the search committee was all pro bono work, Roberts joined in during the most critical part of his team's schedule.UCLA announcedthe committee was formed on Sept. 25, just as the MLB regular season was wrapping up.

The Dodgers were the No. 3 seed in the National League and had to play in the wild card round, where their postseason run began. They went on towin the World Series over the Toronto Blue Jaysin a thrilling seven-game series that concluded on Nov. 1.

Myers added that, despite Roberts being in the busiest part of his season, Roberts joined in on the search, asking how he could help, and he was great in the hiring process. After UCLA hired Chesney, the new Bruins coach had time to connect with Roberts, who offered to assist in the role in any way he could.

"Even being as busy as (Roberts) was, he had time to connect with a coach and offer his services, which was great," Myers said.
