Braves sign All-Star closer Robert Suarez as relief market stays hot

The relief pitching market is not slowing down, and theAtlanta Bravesare doing their best to corner it.

The Braves agreed to a three-year, $45 million contract with All-Star closer Robert Suarez, snagging one of the best late-inning guys left on the market.

The move comes three weeks after the Braves re-signed Raisel Iglesias, their closer for the past three seasons, to a one-year, $16 million contract.

It stands to reason that Suarez, 34, will be the one handling the closer role, as he adds a significantly more dominant look to their bullpen. Suarez saved 40 games for the Padres last season, when he earned his second All-Star selection and retained the closer role even after San Diego acquired fireballing right-hander Mason Miller at the trade deadline.

Padres relief pitcher Robert Suarez (75) pumps his fist after San Diego beat the Diamondbacks at Petco Park in San Diego on Sept. 27, 2025.

Suarez remade his career over five seasons in Japan's Nippon Baseball League, then returned to affiliated ball here in 2022, striking out 61 batters in 47 ⅔ innings of work for the Padres in 2022, when they advanced to the NL Championship Series. His strikeouts per nine innings dipped from 11.5 to 7.8 in 2023, but he bounced back in 2025 with a rate of 9.7 per nine, and a career-best 9.7 strikeout-walk ratio.

The right-hander had been connected to theNew York Mets, particularly after their loss of closer Edwin Díaz to theLos Angeles Dodgers. Now, the top two andsix of the top 10relievers available have been signed.

Steelers LB TJ Watt hospitalized after experiencing discomfort in his lungs

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers star outside linebackerT.J. Wattis in the hospital after experiencing discomfort in his lungs.

CoachMike Tomlinsaid the seven-time All-Pro and 2021 NFL Defensive Player of the Year was sent to the hospital for evaluation on Wednesday after experiencing discomfort while receiving treatment.

Watt was scheduled to undergo testing on Thursday, Tomlin said.

"He and I communicated last night," Tomlin said. "He was comfortable and that's all I have really at this point."

The Steelershad the day off on Wednesday, an adjustment to their schedule this week to accommodate playing against Miami on Monday night in Week 15. It's common for players to come in during their days off to receive medical treatment.

Tomlin saw Watt in the cafeteria on Wednesday, which is when Tomlin said he became "aware" of what he described as Watt's "lung situation."

Watt had been on the injury report last week with a toe problem but was ready in time to make his 56th straight regular-season start for the Steelers (7-6).

Asked if Watt had been dealing with any sort of prior injury that could be in any way related to the discomfort, Tomlin said, "Not to my knowledge, particularly in game or after the game, nothing."

Watt has led the NFL in sacks three times in his nine seasons, all with the Steelers. He tied a league record in 2021 when he finished the year with 22 1/2 sacks.

Watt has seven sacks in 2025 and recently surpassed his older brother and three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt on the league's career sack list when he recorded his 115th last month.

"I haven't talked to TJ but I would never bet against anybody in the Watt family of being able to deal with something small or large and getting back on the field as quickly as possible," Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said.

While Watt has just seven sacks — putting him on pace for the fewest over the course of a season in which he's played at least 13 games since his rookie year in 2017 — he remains a singularly disruptive force that requires constant attention from opponents, usually in the form of double teams.

Alex Highsmith and Nick Herbig will start against the Dolphins if Watt is unable to go. Highsmith, Watt's longtime running mate, has endured a bumpy season of his own. Highsmith has missed four games due to various injuries, but he also had the game-sealing sack in the final moments of last Sunday's win at Baltimore that pushed the Steelers back atop the AFC North.

"When he's healthy, boy, he's good," defensive coordinator Teryl Austin said. "And I thought he was really good last week. ... Obviously, you know, everybody remembers the sack to end the game, but the dirty work stuff that he did all game in terms of setting edges and really being really physical at the point of attack, that's the stuff that he really brings."

Highsmith's concern isn't about his role but Watt, who is dealing with what Highsmith called a "scary situation."

"I've just been praying for him," Highsmith said. "I know he's getting better."

12 players who could have a December to Remember and help you win a fantasy football championship

It's fantasy football playoff time and we're all excited with the stakes raised. And come three weeks from now, you might be in your moment of glory, confetti falling on you and deafening cheers all throughout the stadium (or living room).

Life only makes sense looking backwards, but of course we need to live it forwards. But if you'd like a sneak peak of what might happen this month, I'm here to entertain you.

[Upgrade to Fantasy Plus and gain your edge in player projections and much more]

Let's go through the four main positions and give you 12 players who could have a December to Remember in the fantasy playoffs. I'll give an obvious pick, an underrated pick and a sleeper pick at all four spots. Dream big, gamers — you just might get what you want.

Quarterbacks

The Obvious Pick: Josh Allen doesn't have the easiest slate for the fantasy playoffs (Patriots, Browns, Eagles), but he's proven to be matchup-proof for his career. He's three points better than the QB field on average, and tends to amp up his rushing game in the latter part of the season.

An Underrated Pick: It would help Brock Purdy if his opponents fight back on offense and force a few pinball games. But there's nothing wrong with a finishing kick of Titans, Colts (ravaged by injury) and Bears, with every game weather-safe. The Niners are getting healthy at the right time, boosted by the Week 14 bye.

A Sleeper Pick: Marcus Mariota will start Week 15 against the Giants, then it's wait-and-see mode with Jayden Daniels. But in Mariota's last three starts, good things have happened: QB3, QB9, QB13. Washington closes with a lovely schedule for passing production: Giants, Eagles, Cowboys.

Running Backs

The Obvious Pick: Christian McCaffrey is an unfair cheat code again this season, 40 touches ahead of the field and playable in any game script. He's currently on pace to sail past 1,000 yards in both rushing and receiving, and he's already banked 13 touchdowns. No reason this music won't play all season.

An Underrated Pick: Saquon Barkley has been sitting in the disappointment file all year, but maybe last week's splashy game against the Chargers (20-122-1) will get him going. Star OT Lane Johnson should be back soon, and Barkley gets a dream slate to attack in December (Raiders, Commanders, Bills).

A Sleeper Pick: Bam Knight can't be a proactive pick in Week 15, up against that ridiculous Houston defense. But if you can survive through this week, Knight gets to aim at the Falcons and Bengals, two defenses that everyone runs against. Trey Benson is out for the year, clearing the runway for Knight.

Wide Receivers

The Obvious Pick: Jaxon Smith-Njigba has outclassed the receiver field all year, giving us just one washout game out of 13. And it's possible the Seahawks might lean on him a little more than usual going forward — not that he's lacked for opportunity — if the team feels the 2,000-yard milestone is in play.

An Underrated Pick: There are conditions with a Michael Wilson recommendation: he needs to get past Houston this week, and things become complicated if and when Marvin Harrison Jr. (heel) returns. But Wilson has been a locked-in WR1 for the weeks Harrison doesn't play, and I doubt he'd vanish even if Harrison comes back. The Bengals in Week 17 could be a holiday present from the fantasy gods.

A Sleeper Pick: Over the last six weeks, Wan'Dale Robinson leads all receivers in both targets and catches. There's only been one touchdown, but Jaxson Dart is back and the PPR scam is alive. The Commanders in Week 15 and Raiders in Week 17 are lovely matchups.

Tight Ends

The Obvious Pick: As you know, Jacoby Brissett took over the starting QB job in Arizona two months ago. Over that period, this is how Trey McBride has performed: TE2, TE3, TE6, TE1, TE1, TE3, TE2, TE13. If you'd prefer the raw numbers, they add up as such: 64-662-7. It feels like years ago when McBride couldn't buy a touchdown; that was probably a Kyler Murray problem. Survive Houston in Week 15, and then McBride can take you home (he should torch the Bengals in Week 17).

An Underrated Pick: Harold Fannin Jr. is on pace for 77-809-5, a remarkable rookie season given all the chaos around him. And Fannin and Shedeur Sanders showed legitimate chemistry in last week's blow-up against Tennessee. The remaining games are all gettable: Bears, Bills, Steelers. It's a shame the Cincinnati rematch is tucked into Week 18.

A Sleeper Pick: I understand the Miami passing volume is a reason to be concerned, and Darren Waller wasn't even the team's best tight end last week. But Waller always carries significant touchdown equity, and we need to be mindful of his delicious schedule for the fantasy playoffs (Steelers, Bengals, Buccaneers). Maybe you need a "show-me" game for now, but be ready when the Bengals come to town.

National park passes to feature Trump's face. Nature group sues.

Some of theNational Park Service's 2026 annual passdesigns bear PresidentDonald Trump's face, but an environmental group is suing to stop it.

TheCenter for Biological Diversityfiled a lawsuit on Dec. 10, alleging the new design violates a law that requires the America the Beautiful pass to feature a photo taken on public lands that won anannual photo contest.

On Nov. 25, theDepartment of the Interiorannounced "new, modernized graphics for all annual passes, featuring bold, patriotic designs that honor America's landscapes, heritage and outdoor legacy."

Alater video fromSecretary of the InteriorDoug Burgumindicates the winner of the latest contest, a photo of Glacier National Park by Akshay Joshi, would be featured on a pass for non-residents. The center's lawsuit also alleges creating a new pass delineation between U.S. residents and foreign tourists is also in violation of the law.

For the annual pass for U.S. residents, Burgum pointed to a pass that showed Trump's official presidential portrait next toGeorge Washington's.

"Blotting out the majesty of America's national parks with a closeup of his own face is Trump's crassest, most ego-driven action yet," Kierán Suckling, executive director of the Center for Biological Diversity, said in a statement. "It's disgusting of Trump to politicize America's most sacred refuge by pasting his face over the national parks in the same way he slaps his corporate name on buildings, restaurants, and golf courses."

The Department of the Interior did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Department of Agriculture, also named in the lawsuit along with SecretaryBrooke Rollins, declined to comment on ongoing litigation.

Americans will get more free national park days next year, but it's going to cost foreign tourists much more to visit some of the most popular parks. Starting Jan. 1, 2026, How much does it cost to visit national parks? Not all national parks charge entry fees. Those that do typically top out at $35 per private vehicle. To save money on multiple trips, visitors can buy an America the Beautiful annual pass. Pricing for those will stay flat for U.S. residents at $80. However starting Jan. 1, annual passes will cost $250 for nonresidents. And international travelers who opt out of annual passes will be subject to extra $100 per person fees at several bucket-list parks. Residents will be asked to enter their ZIP code when buying passes through Recreation.gov and show a U.S.-government issued photo ID when using the passes. Individuals without such identification will be asked to upgrade to a nonresident annual pass, according to the Department of Interior, which noted that existing passes will continue to be honored until expiration. Revenue generated by the new pricing will be invested back into the parks for upgrades and improvements as well as essential maintenance. Which national parks are impacted? *	Acadia National Park in Maine *	Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah *	Everglades National Park in Florida *	Glacier National Park in Montana *	Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona *	Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming *	Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado *	Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks in California *	Yellowstone National Park in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming *	Yosemite National Park in California *	Zion National Park in Utah Sequoia and Kings Canyon are technically different parks, but operate as one. In addition to the pricing changes, the Department of Interior is rolling out new digital America the Beautiful passes for annual pass holders, military, seniors, fourth graders and visitors with disabilities. Those can be stored on mobile devices and linked to physical cards for user convenience. Going forward, the passes will cover two motorcycles per pass, instead of one. Also, both digital and physical passes will feature new artwork with

TheCenter for Biological Diversityis a nonprofit headquartered in Tucson, Arizona, aimed at protecting species from extinction. The lawsuit alleges the Trump administration's decision is harmful for undercutting the contest results and forcing those who choose to get a pass to have a card it says the administration has turned into a "partisan political platform forPresident Trump."

A 2026 America the Beautiful National Park Service annual pass features President Donald Trump's portrait. The Center for Biological Diversity sued the Trump administration, saying the pass must have a contest winner photo taken in federal lands, as deemed by federal law. Screenshot of the Department of the Interior video showing 2026 park pass designs. This design features the most recent photo contest winner, but the video indicated it will be sold to non-U.S. residents for an upcharge,

Federal law also states that the departments can only make discounts for six groups in addition to the main America the Beautiful pass, according to the lawsuit. Those six groups are armed forces and their dependents, residents over the age of 62, disabled citizens and residents, veterans and Gold Star families, and volunteers. In the video, Burgum said the resident annual pass would sell for $80 while the annual pass for foreign visitors would sell for $250.

The lawsuit also included the photos of previous years' passes, which show scenic vistas and wildlife characters from public lands.

"Every winning Annual America the Beautiful Pass in the 12 years prior to 2026 was photographed on federal lands or waters, was not controversial or inappropriate, nor noticeably or excessively altered," the lawsuit stated.

Previous 'America the Beautiful' passes compiled by the Center for Biological Diversity. The passes feature a photo contest winner, but one 2026 design feaures President Donald Trump and the Center is suing to stop it.

National Parks also made changes to free days

The new pass designs come as the National Park Service made some controversial changes to its free access days. The free access days will only be available for U.S. citizens and permanent residents.

Two of the removed holidays celebrate Black history:Martin Luther King Jr. Day, honoring the work of the civil rights leader who advocated to end racism and segregation; andJuneteenth, the holiday that commemorates the day the last group of enslaved people learned they were free after the Union won the Civil War.

NPS also added to what it calls "patriotic fee-free days" in 2016, including Flag Day on June 14, which is also Trump's birthday.

Trumphas made rolling backdiversity, equity and inclusiona key priority of his second administration. The Department of the Interior did not respond to requests for comments on explaining the changes to the NPS fee-free days, though, removing theBlack history holidays has drawn criticism.

Sao Paulo blackout leaves 1.4M without power, hundreds of flights canceled

SAO PAULO (AP) — More than 1.4 millionSao Pauloresidents had no electricity on Thursday after strong winds caused several trees to collapse onto the Brazilian metropolis' grid the day before. Local authorities said there were no injuries, but almost 400 flights were canceled.

Utility Enel has provided no deadline for services to return. One of its directors, Marcelo Puertas, told journalists the Italian company has 1,300 people working to solve the issue since winds of about 100 kilometers per hour (62 miles) started hitting Sao Paulo.

Sao Paulo city hall said 231 trees have fallen due to what it calls effects of an extratropical cyclone formed in the south ofBrazil. Aviation authorities say most of the canceled flights were at the local Congonhas airport, but added that Guarulhos International Airport, outside the city, was also affected.

Mayor Ricardo Nunes, whose administration is responsible for trimming the trees that were pushed against the grid, told journalists Wednesday night he had told the company that it was not putting all of its efforts to fix the problems.

"Every time something happens, we are left behind without electricity," said Nunes, who called the Italian utility company "irresponsible." The grid's status on Wednesday was even worse, with more than 2 million Sao Paulo residents without electricity.

On Thursday, several cars with the Enel logo were filmed in the company's parking lot in downtown Sao Paulo, which further enraged residents and authorities.

Water utility Sabesp said in a statement on Thursday that the lack of electricity is already affecting their services too, as pumps are not working adequately.

At least 254 quarantined in SC over 'accelerating' measles outbreak

Hundreds of people, including children, are quarantined in South Carolina on the heels of an upstate measles outbreak, which health leaders said stems from a lack of vaccinations and recent holiday travel.

At least 111 people have contracted measles since the outbreak began in early October, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH). Of the cases reported in the state's northwest region, 105 people were unvaccinated, state epidemiologist Linda Bell announced during a Wednesday, Dec. 10,news briefing.

The remaining six included three people who received only one of the two recommended MMR doses, Bell said, while another person was vaccinated and the vaccination status of the other two is unknown.

At least 254 people have been placed in quarantine − 16 of them in isolation, Bell said.

"This significant jump in cases is unfortunate," Bell said. "Vaccination continues to be the best way to prevent the disruption that measles is causing to people's education, to employment and other factors in people's lives in our communities."

Bell said authoritiestraced 16 infections to the Way of Truth Church in Spartanburg County in the northwest partof the state. The church, in the city of Inman, is part of South Carolina's Upstate region which also includes Abbeville, Anderson, Cherokee, Greenville, Greenwood, Laurens, McCormick, Oconee, Pickens, and Union counties.

More than two dozen new measles cases reported in South Carolina since Dec. 5

Since Dec. 5, Bell said, 27 new cases had been reported, bringing the total number reported to the DPH this year to 114.

Declared eradicated in the United States in 2000, measles recently made a comeback as vaccination rates have dropped.

Earlier this year, two children ages 6 and 8, died from measles amid an outbreak in Texaswhere Department of State Health Services data revealed more than 94% of cases were in unvaccinated people, USA TODAY previously reported.

"If people are willing to be vaccinated, receiving an MMR vaccination within 72 hours of exposure has been shown to prevent measles infections," Bell said.

What is measles and how is it spread?

Measles is a highly contagious, viral infection that primarily, and most severely, affects children. According to theWorld Health Organization (WHO), it infects the respiratory tract before spreading throughout the body.

It's a vaccine-preventable disease, and according tothe U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data, one in five unvaccinated peoplewho contract the virus end up hospitalized.

Measles is spread through contact with infected nasal or throat secretions, or by breathing in the virus after it's coughed, sneezed or sent into the air by an infected person, according to WHO. The measles virus can remain contagious in the air or on contaminated surfaces for up to two hours.

Symptoms of measles

Measles symptoms usually appear seven to 14 days after contact with the virus and typically include high fever, cough, runny nose and watery eyes, according to the CDC. Measles rash appears three to five days after the onset of the first symptoms.

Other signs and symptoms of the virus include:

  • Koplik spots, tiny white spots that may appear inside the mouth two to three days after symptoms begin

  • High fever. When the rash appears, a person's fever may spike to more than 104 degrees Fahrenheit

  • Cough

  • Runny nose and sneezing

  • Red, watery eyes

  • Loss of appetite, diarrhea

  • Reddish-brown rash that can spread across the entire body

  • Small raised bumps may also appear on top of the flat red spots (the spots may become joined together as they spread from the head to the rest of the body)

Cubs add Hoby Milner to bullpen with $3.75 million, 1-year, AP source says

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs added Hoby Milner to their bullpen on Thursday, agreeing to a $3.75 million, one-year contract with the left-hander, according to a person familiar with the deal.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the move was pending a physical.

Milner matched his career high with 73 appearances for Texas this season, finishing with a 3-4 record and a 3.84 ERA. He held lefty hitters to a .208 batting average and a .526 OPS.

The move reunites Milner with Craig Counsell, who managed Milwaukee for nine seasons before he was hired by the Cubs inNovember 2023. Milner pitched for the Brewers for four years before signing with the Rangers lastDecember.

Chicago is remaking its bullpen after it made it to the playoffs this year for the first time since 2020. Brad Keller, Drew Pomeranz and Caleb Thielbar — three key relievers for the Cubs this season — are free agents.

The Cubs finalized a $14.5 million, two-year contract with right-handerPhil Matonlast month. Maton played for St. Louis and Texas last season, going 4-5 with a 2.79 ERA and five saves in 63 games.

Milner, who turns 35 in January, made his major league debut with Philadelphia in 2017. He is 13-9 with a 3.82 ERA in 367 career games, also pitching for Tampa Bay and the Los Angeles Angels.

He had his best season with the Brewers in 2023, going 2-1 with a career-low 1.82 ERA in 73 appearances.
