A woman was found dead Thursday on a hiking trail in northern Colorado, in what authorities believe to be a rare fatal mountain lion attack.

Hikers on the Crosier Mountain trail in Larimer County spotted a mountain lion near a person lying on the ground around 12:15 p.m., according toColorado Parks and Wildlife.

The hikers drove the animal away by throwing rocks before finding the victim had no pulse.

"Mountain lion attacks in Colorado are considered to be very rare," CPW spokesperson Kara Van Hoose said at a news conference. While 28 previous attacks have been reported to CPW since 1990, the last fatal attack was in 1999, the agency said.

The Larimer County coroner is expected to release the victim's identity and cause of death, Van Noose said.

CPW, which is leading the investigation, said officers shot at a lion on the scene, and later tracked and euthanized it. Another lion in the area was also euthanized by officers.

Wildlife involved in attacks on humans must be euthanized for public safety, CPW said. The animals will be tested for human DNA to determine whether they were responsible for the attack and will also be examined for any abnormalities or neurological diseases like rabies and avian influenza.

Colorado is home to an estimated 3,800 to 4,000 mountain lions with populations growing since they were classified as a big game species in 1965, according toCPW's website.

Living mostly in brushy areas and woodlands in low elevation, the animals largely prey on deer and elk.

CPW advises anyone who encounters a mountain lion to make noise, hold objects overhead to appear bigger and slowly back away.

Australia's Northern Territory considers passing assisted dying laws for second time in 31 years

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — The first place in the world to legalize voluntary euthanasia 31 years ago could this year become the last part of Australia to secure the same legal reform as the Northern Territory government on Friday announced plans to legislate for doctor-assisted dying for a second time.

The Northern Territory's world-first laws passed in 1995 wereoverturned by the Australian Parliamenttwo years later and after four terminally ill patients were legally helped to die.

Since then, all six Australian states havepassed assisted dying lawsand the Australian Parliament has lifted the ban on the two territories, Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory, passing such laws of their own.

The Australian Capital Territory passed its voluntary euthanasia laws in 2024 and Northern Territory Attorney-General Marie-Clare Boothby said Friday that lawmakers in her jurisdiction would consider a bill by mid 2026.

Lawmakers would be allowed to vote on it according to their own consciences rather than being expected to follow a party line.

"Legislating for the rights of the terminally ill is one of the most sensitive and complex reforms any government can undertake," Boothby said in a statement. "We're taking the time to get this right. We're working carefully and consultatively — not rushing it — and we are committed to getting the balance right."

A parliamentary committee recommended in September 2025 that a doctor-assisted suicide law be adopted by the Northern Territory, as well as recommending a public education campaign be launched to raise awareness and counter misinformation particularly in remote and Indigenous communities.

Drafting of the bill was underway, Boothby said.

"We won't shy away from difficult issues and we are committed to progressing these reforms carefully, thoughtfully and responsibly," Boothby said.

The Northern Territory has several unique characteristics and challenges among Australian states and territories.

The territory has by far the smallest population of the eight Australian jurisdictions: 260,000 people scattered across an area almost the size of France. Australia's population currently is 28 million.

While Indigenous people accounted for 3.8% of the Australian population of 25 million at the last census in 2021, they account for more than a quarter of the Northern Territory population.

Indigenous views vary on voluntary euthanasia. Some Indigenous people are suspicious of the medical system and fear they could be killed against their wishes. Others advocate for equitable access to assisted dying with strong cultural safeguards. There also are conflicting cultural beliefs surrounding death.

Northern Territory Legislative Assembly Speaker Robyn Lambley said establishing adequate education about the assisted dying law for Indigenous people, many of whom don't speak English as a first language, was "probably unrealistic."

"I don't think we're ready," Lambley said in an online post. "Maybe we'll never be ready in the Territory. Aboriginal people have reluctance around accessing health services for anything, even having babies."

"It will be a disaster. I don't think it will work. We just need to take it at our own pace," she added.

Indonesia's new penal code takes effect, marking historic break with colonial law

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) —Indonesiaon Friday began enforcing its newly ratified penal code, replacing a Dutch-era criminal law that had governed the country for more than 80 years and marking a major shift in its legal landscape.

Since proclaiming independence in 1945, the Southeast Asian country had continued to operate under a colonial framework widely criticized as outdated and misaligned with Indonesia's social values. Efforts to revise the code stalled for decades as lawmakers debated how to balance human rights, religious norms and local traditions in the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation.

The 345-page Indonesian Penal Code, known as the KUHP,was passed in 2022. At the time, then-U.S. State Department spokesperson Ned Price said the U.S. was "closely monitoring the revised criminal code" of its democratic partner.

It criminalizes sex outside marriage, applies to citizens and foreign visitors, and reintroduces penalties for insulting the president and state institutions. It comes into force following a three-year transition period.

Moving away from a colonial framework

A previously revised code was poised for passage in 2019, but then-President Joko Widodo urged lawmakers todelay a voteamid mounting public criticism that led to nationwide protests involving tens of thousands of people.

Opponents said it contained articles that discriminated against minorities and that the legislative process lacked transparency.

A parliamentary taskforce finalized the bill in November 2022 and lawmakers unanimously approved it a month later in what the government called a "historic step."

Deputy Law Minister Edward Hiariej has defended the reforms as a modernization effort that shifts Indonesia's criminal justice paradigm toward corrective, restorative and rehabilitative justice.

"The new criminal code prioritizes repairing harm and social reintegration, rather than relying solely on punishment," Hiariej said during a briefing on the new penal code on Thursday, adding that these principles reflect values long embedded in Indonesian society.

Alongside the KUHP, Indonesia is also preparing a new criminal procedural law, or KUHAP, aimed at addressing procedural inefficiencies and strengthening human rights protections. Together, the reforms represent a comprehensive overhaul of the justice system, Hiariej said.

Provisions under scrutiny

Under the amended code, sex outside marriage is punishable by up to one year in prison, while cohabitation carries a six-month sentence. However, adultery cases can only proceed following a complaint by a spouse, parents or children — a safeguard the government says prevents arbitrary enforcement, including against tourists.

Rights groups remain skeptical. Human Rights Watch warned the morality-based provisions could lead to invasions of privacy and selective enforcement.

The code also restores a ban on insulting a sitting president or vice president, state institutions and the national ideology. Cases must be reported by the president and carry penalties of up to three years in prison for "attacking the honor or dignity" of state leaders.

Hiariej said the government has issued strict guidelines distinguishing criticism from criminal insult, but rights advocates argue the provisions threaten freedom of expression.

Amnesty International Indonesia executive director Usman Hamid described the KUHP as "a significant blow" to civil liberties.

"This overreaching criminal code will entrench obstacles to freedom of speech while criminalizing legitimate and peaceful dissent," Hamid said, warning it could open the door to abuse of power.

The new code also expands an existing blasphemy law, maintaining prison sentences of up to five years for deviations from the core teachings of Indonesia's six officially recognized religions. It preserves penalties of up to 10 years for associating with Marxist-Leninist organizations and four years for spreading communist ideology.

Mixed reactions

Some advocates welcomed lawmakers' decision to drop a proposed article that would have criminalized gay sex, following opposition from civil society groups. The move was hailed as a rare positive outcome for Indonesia's LGBTQ community.

The revised code retains the death penalty, despite calls from rights groups to abolish capital punishment. However, it introduces a 10-year probationary period, after which death sentences may be commuted to life imprisonment or 20 years if the convict demonstrates good behavior.

It also maintains a ban on abortion while formalizing existing exceptions for life-threatening medical conditions and pregnancies resulting from rape, provided the fetus is less than 12 weeks old.

A shift in sentencing philosophy

Legal experts say the KUHP reflects a fundamental change in how punishment is applied. Hiariej noted that public opinion still often favors harsh penalties, a mindset he described as rooted in outdated notions of retribution.

"This is a legacy of the law of retaliation," he said, contrasting it with modern systems that emphasize harm repair and reintegration.

The Institute for Criminal Justice Reform said the code expands non-custodial sentences, including community service and supervision, and gives judges greater discretion to tailor penalties.

ICJR executive director Erasmus Napitupulu said these measures could help ease prison overcrowding and better serve victims.

He also praised the probationary mechanism for death row inmates as "an initial step toward eventually abolishing the death penalty in Indonesia."

"This is a good mechanism and meaningful progress for criminal justice reform," Napitupulu said.

Kings vs. Celtics highlights

Game notes

Kings jumped out to an 8-0 lead behind a quick five points from forward Precious Achiuwa. He had eight points in the first quarter.

Kings led 17-12 with 6:54 remaining. Celtics guard Payton Pritchard added seven points in the quarter for Boston.

Boston knocked down a couple 3s from Luka Garza and Anfernee Simons. After the first quarter, the Kings held a one-point lead, 29-28.

In the second quarter, both squads continued their tit-for-tat and exchanged buckets through the second quarter.

No one was able to pull away in the first half, as both the Kings and Celtics matched each other on 3-pointers, easy points in the paint and getting free throw opportunities.

The Celtics had the slight upper hand, though, going into the locker room at halftime with a 62-61 lead, led by backup guard Anfernee Simons with 14 points and Jaylen Brown with 10 points at halftime. The Kings were led by DeMar DeRozan with 12 points and Achiuwa had 10.

The Celtics opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run in the first two minutes, momentarily extending the lead to 69-61.

DeRozan stopped the run with a spin in the lane through traffic to get all the way to the cup for a layup. Russell Westbrook followed with his first made 3-pointer of the game.

Boston responded with a layup from Brown and a Sam Hauser long distance trey.

But the Kings continued to pour it on and took a three-point lead after DeRozan found Dennis Schroder along the 3-point arc in the left corner. The Kings took a 77-74 lead with under seven minutes in the third quarter.

Brown got things cooking in the third quarter, scoring 11 points in the period. The physicality intensified late in the third quarter. Achiuwa and Neemias Queta were assessed double technical fouls after jockeying for position during a jump ball and shoving each other.

The score was tied at 88 after 36 minutes.

It was a back-and-forth affair entering the final period where both teams continued to battle.

Celtics took an early five-point lead with 9:26 left in the game, but the Kings remained within striking distance.

The Kings couldn't contain Jaylen Brown as Boston's lead grew as large as 10 with under six minutes left in the game.

Celtics guard Derrick White, who was quiet all game, scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to help Boston pull away late in the game. Brown fouled out with 2:09 left.

The game was iced on a ferocious slam by a former King, Neemias Queta.

The Celtics won the game, 120-106.

Ole Miss hits field goal with 6 seconds left to win Sugar Bowl thriller over Georgia

Ole Miss authored anincredible 39-34 Sugar Bowl victorythanks to a 47-yard a game-winning field goal by Lucas Carneiro with six seconds left.

— ◇ (@F0RGIAT0)January 2, 2026

Carneiro's kick came after No. 3 Georgia tied the game with less than a minute remaining on a short field goal by Peyton Woodring. And the Rebels got into field goal position when QB Trinidad Chambliss found WR De'Zhaun Stribling in man coverage on third down with under 30 seconds to go after Georgia sent a blitz hoping to force a punt and try for a game-winning kick of its own.

The win means No. 6 Ole Miss will play No. 10 Miami in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 8 for a spot in the national championship game on Jan. 19. And it also means that Ole Miss has now won two College Football Playoff games under coach Pete Golding after Lane Kiffin left the team at the end of the regular season to be the new coach at LSU.

Though Carneiro's field goal broke a 34-34 tie, the margin of victory ended up being five points after a lateral by Georgia on the ensuing kickoff hit an end zone pylon to result in a safety.

That safety necessitated a replay review to establish that there was still a second on the clock. The review took place as Ole Miss celebrated and the Sugar Bowl trophy presentation stage had been wheeled out onto the field.

After the stage was wheeled back off the field — and the celebrations stopped — Georgia tried an onside kick and recovered it. But the Bulldogs' last-ditch multi-lateral play included a penalty and didn't go anywhere in the first place.

The best quarterfinal of the season … by far

The final quarterfinal of this season's College Football Playoff provided the most drama. Chambliss and Georgia QB Gunner Stockton each played incredibly well as the Rebels somehow scored 27 points in the second half on their way to the win.

Chambliss took over in the second half with his improvisation skills. The Rebels took a 27-24 lead on a TD run by Kewan Lacy after Chambliss saved multiple plays that assuredly looked like they'd result in a no gain at best.

Chambliss finished 30-of-46 passing for 362 yards and two touchdowns. It's not a stretch to say it was the best performance of his career.

The former Ferris State QB transferred to Ole Miss ahead of the 2025 season and began the year backing up Austin Simmons. After Simmons injured his ankle in Week 2, Chambliss became the team's starter and didn't relinquish the job after Simmons got healthy.

Chambliss finished eighth in the Heisman Trophy voting — one place behind Stockton — as he threw for nearly 3,300 yards and 19 TDs during the regular season while also rushing for 506 yards and eight scores.

Ole Miss trailed 21-12 at halftime after the Rebels botched the final offensive play before halftime. Instead of potentially kicking a field goal to cut Georgia's lead to six, Ole Miss TE Dae'Quan Wright didn't get out of bounds after catching a pass in Georgia territory with less than 10 seconds to go.

It was easy to see how the end to the second quarter could be demoralizing for the Rebels. Instead, Ole Miss responded with 20 points in the fourth quarter to seize control of the game.

Georgia almost benefited from a massive missed call

Ole Miss fans would gladly point out that Georgia shouldn't have had the opportunity to tie the game with less than a minute to go.

The Bulldogs' game-tying field goal came after officials inexplicably missed a blatant facemask on Lacy. The missed call came on second down and would have resulted in an automatic first down with approximately six minutes to go.

How do you possibly miss this facemask?pic.twitter.com/3BDtYdLrU4

— CFB Kings (@CFBKings)January 2, 2026

Instead, Chambliss' third-down pass was batted down at the line of scrimmage, and Georgia converted a huge fourth down itself to get into position for a game-tying field goal.

Stockton finished the game 18-of-31 passing for 204 yards and a TD while also rushing for two scores. In any other game — especially in November — that would have been plenty for Georgia to win.

It wasn't on Thursday night.

Georgia entered the Sugar Bowl allowing just 29 points over its last four games combined. The Bulldogs' defense had emerged at the end of the regular season and held Alabama to just 209 total yards in the SEC title game. The 12 points Ole Miss had at halftime was the most anyone had scored on Georgia since Mississippi State put up 21 on Nov. 8.

The Rebels kept scoring in the second half. Lacy finished with 22 carries for 98 yards and two scores while Harrison Wallace III had nine catches for 156 yards and a TD and Stribling had seven catches for 122 yards.

Fernando Mendoza, No. 1 Indiana shut down No. 9 Alabama in historic win at the Rose Bowl to advance to CFP semifinals

PASADENA, Calif. — Finally, the team that was supposed to win did.

No. 1 Indiana shut down No. 9 Alabama and picked up a convincing 38-3 winat the Rose Bowl on Thursday afternoon. The Hoosiers, who are now a perfect 14-0 this season, will advance to the Peach Bowl next week to take on No. 5 Oregon in theCollege Football Playoffsemifinals.

Indiana is now the first team in the expanded playoff's history to win a postseason game after receiving a first-round bye. Entering Thursday's contest in Southern California, teams who had received a bye were a combined 0-6.

After a bit of a slow start — this was the first Rose Bowl in 26 years to have a scoreless opening quarter — things quickly spiraled out of control for the Crimson Tide. Kalen DeBoer and Alabama, after a bit of failed trickery, opted to go for it on a short fourth down deep in their own territory early in the second quarter. It backfired completely. They tried a short pass to convert the fourth down, which set up Indiana with incredible field position after it didn't work.

Just four plays later, Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza found an open Charlie Becker in the back of the end zone for the touchdown. That put the Hoosiers up 10-0 at the time.

Indiana's defense forced another turnover just before halftime, too, after Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson tried to scramble for a first down. He was hit hard by D'Angelo Ponds and lost the ball, which led to a 1-yard touchdown pass to Omar Cooper Jr. right before the break.

[Get more Hoosiers football news: Indiana team feed]

Indiana entered the locker room up by 17 points. Alabama, which trailed Oklahoma at halftime in the first round of the playoff, managed just 30 rushing yards and five first downs while averaging less than four yards per play in the opening 30 minutes of the game.

Whatever DeBoer said at halftime didn't work. Alabama came back and had to punt the ball away about 90 seconds into the third quarter. Mendoza then quickly led Indiana down the field and hit Elijah Sarratt for a 24-yard touchdown. That put the game out of reach not even halfway through the third period.

DeBoer even tried to switch quarterbacks after that, but it didn't matter.Austin Mack came in to replace Simpson, who briefly went into the injury tent, and actually led Alabama on its first scoring drive of the game. He got them into scoring position on a few deep passes, and set up an easy field goal to avoid the shutout.

But Indiana, of course, kept piling on. Kaelon Black capped a six-play drive with a 25-yard touchdown run right away, and then Mendoza got them back into scoring position on their next drive to set up an 18-yard touchdown run from Roman Hemby.

From there, the Hoosiers were on cruise control for the rest of the game.

The playoff win was the first in Indiana school history. The Hoosiers also made the playoff last season in Curt Cignetti's first year with the team, but fell to Notre Dame in the opening round. Indiana is now an incredible 24-2 under Cignetti's reign. The Hoosiers' 14 wins this season marks a school record, which was set last year, and this is now the first time in program history that they've had back-to-back seasons with double digit wins.

Indiana will now take on Oregon next week in Georgia. TheDucks rolled past Texas Tech 23-0 in their quarterfinals matchup at the Orange Bowlearlier on Thursday. The winner of that contest will advance to the national championship game, a place Oregon hasn't been to in over a decade. Indiana hasn't even come close.

But now, with a playoff win finally under their belts, the Hoosiers have more than proven themselves as a real threat to win it all in just a few weeks.

A blue moon, lunar eclipses and super moons. What 2026 has in store.

2026 will bring severallunar eventsthat backyard astronomers will want to stay awake for.

The first full moon of the year will take place on Saturday, Jan. 3, and is known as the Wolf Moon, according to the Farmer's Almanac.

The moon will also be a super moon, which will look around 30% brighter and up to 14% larger. It will be the last super moon until November 2026.

But January's full moon isn't the only lunar event to look forward to in 2026. From an eclipse and a blue moon to super moons, these are the events you should mark your calendar for.

When is the first full moon of 2026?

The first full moon will take place on Saturday, Jan. 3, and it will also be a super moon.

Once in a blue moon

A blue moon is set to occur on May 31, and will peak at 4:45 a.m. ET. And no, the moon won't actually look like the color blue.

A blue moon is not a common occurrence, hence the expression "once in a blue moon," and only occurs every 2.5 years, according toNASA.

The last blue moon occurred on Aug. 19, 2024, when the moon was asuper blue moon, meaning it was the closest it had been to Earth that month and appeared brighter and larger.

Several lunar events will take place throughout 2026.

2026 lunar eclipses

There will be two lunar eclipses in 2026, according toNASA. Both will be visible in the Americas.

The lunar eclipses will take place on the following dates:
