Jamie Smith said recently that the series against West Indies had left him 'mentally drained', but there was little sign of fatigue as he gave England the edge in this dogfight of a first Test against Sri Lanka. It says much for the start he has made to his Test career that the Jonny Bairstow-Ben Foakes wicketkeeping debate already feels like ancient history. And it said plenty for his nous and skill that, in testing conditions against a persistent attack, he ticked off his third half-century in four games to help England to 259 for six in reply to the tourists' 236.
