Footy clubs in shock after young referee Shawn McQuillan dies in the middle of kids' game: 'My heart is shattered into a million pieces'
A footy community is in mourning after referee Shawn McQuillan died of an unspecified medical incident during an under-16s game on the Gold Coast on Saturday. The popular match official collapsed on the field at Bycroft Oval at around 9am during the clash between the Southport Tigers and Runaway Bay Seagulls and four ambulances were called to the venue shortly afterwards. A Queensland Ambulance spokesperson said paramedics found McQuillan in a life-threatening condition and took him to Gold Coast University Hospital.
