(Jason Fochtman/Houston Chronicle) Matt Kawahara Wed, October 28, 2026 at 8:06 PM UTC About Our Ads Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement The Houston Astros ' coaching staff is losing another member with Jason Bell set to leave for a role on the Boston Red Sox's major-league staff, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed Wednesday.
Bell served as the Astros' major-league field coordinator in 2026 after two seasons as quality assurance coach. He worked with the team's outfielders during that time and helped coordinate spring training. This season was the 10th in the Astros organization for Bell, who spent five as Houston's minor-league field coordinator. His impending departure was first reported by MLB.com .
Bell, 36, was among the coaches the Astros planned to retain after opting not to bring back former manager Joe Espada and other members of their 2026 coaching staff this month. The exact role Bell will hold with the Red Sox is still being determined, a person with knowledge said.
The Astros have yet to fill their vacancies at general manager or manager, with the GM role unoccupied since the team dismissed Dana Brown in mid-August.
Along with Espada, whose contract expired after the season, the Astros opted not to retain third-base coach Tony Perezchica, assistant hitting coach Anthony Iapoce, assistant pitching coach Ethan Katz, catching instructor Tim Cossins and game planning coach Tommy Kawamura from their 2026 staff.
Houston said it would retain pitching coach Josh Miller, first-base coach Dave Clark, hitting coach Victor Rodriguez, bullpen catcher Javier Bracamonte and Bell. Bench coach Omar López was offered an opportunity to remain in the organization in a different role, the Astros said Oct. 14.
Bell, 36, joined the Astros organization in 2017 as a development coach and managed in short-season A-ball in 2018. He then served as Houston's minor-league field coordinator from 2019-23 and as assistant director of player development in 2023.
A former college pitcher, Bell earned a master's degree in kinesiology from Central Missouri in 2014 and wrote his thesis paper on the Astros while interning at Baseball Info Solutions. He joined the major-league coaching staff in 2024 under Espada, who was promoted to manager that season.
