Former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit has blasted Trent Alexander-Arnold for his 'bull****' comments of trophies which means extra to Liverpool than Manchester City.
The 25-year-old ruffled a number of feathers by saying any success Liverpool have in all probability means more to their fans than Manchester City supporters when Pep Guardiola's aspect carry trophies.
Chatting with FourFourTwo, he stated: 'We're up towards a machine that's built to win – that's the only solution to describe Metropolis and their organisation.
'Wanting again on this period, although they've gained more titles than us and have in all probability been extra profitable, our trophies will imply extra to us and our fanbase because of the situations at each clubs, financially.
'How both clubs have built their teams and the way through which we've executed it, in all probability means extra to our fans.'
The comments definitely triggered some debate, but Petit was firmly on the opposite aspect of the argument to the Reds and England star.
Chatting with OCB Scores, the Frenchman stated: 'What Trent Alexander-Arnold stated about trophies being extra essential to Liverpool gamers and fans is bull****. That's bull****.
'Is he making an attempt to say that Liverpool fans are better and more passionate than different followers?
'Does he assume they need to win more trophies than different clubs for his or her followers? That's ridiculous. Once I read that remark I assumed to myself: "Typically it's higher to close your mouth".
'Pep Guardiola and Manchester Metropolis have been the reference point in Europe for years and Liverpool have completed so nicely also, I'll miss Jurgen Klopp.
'But when it comes to Trent, typically when you've got one thing to say just give it some thought twice earlier than you open your mouth.'
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp defended his player for the feedback, telling a press conference: 'I am not positive how typically we now have to say in this membership how typically we respect Metropolis.
'Trent understands that but he is a Liverpool fan, he stood on the edges before the pitch. Our slogan 'This Means Extra' means it means more to us.
'Two years ago, we had a parade after dropping the Champions League the night time earlier than. Inform me a metropolis that may do that where it seems to be like we gained? This membership is special to us. So if we feel it, why not say it? I am not really [in other opinions]. It's how he feels. I'm fairly positive he confirmed complete respect as properly.
'Man Metropolis are probably the most successful in years and perhaps Europe and it means lots for their individuals I'm positive. Perhaps for us, it's as a result of we didn't win that many. It's not that we gained 5 after which six and the fifth was higher.
'You're keen on these interviews when somebody says what they assume and the entire world [reacts]. He's still allowed to assume what he needs. Nothing fallacious with what Trent stated for my part.'
